Hypertrophy of the Inferior Olivary Nucleus in Patients with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy
European Neurology, 1998Hypertrophic changes in the inferior olivary nuclei have been occasionally described in patients with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). To elucidate the incidence of olivary hypertrophy, we investigated morphologically the olives and their associated pathways in 20 autopsied cases: 11 cases of PSP, 3 cases of Machado-Joseph disease and 6 cases of ...

Pathology of the inferior olivary nucleus in patients with multiple system atrophy
Acta Neuropathologica, 2002The inferior olivary nucleus (ION) from nine patients with multiple system atrophy was examined with antibodies against alpha-synuclein, ubiquitin, synaptophysin, glial fibrillary acidic protein, the Golgi apparatus (GA)-trans-Golgi network (TGN), and microglia/macrophages.

The red nucleus activity in rats deprived of the inferior olivary complex
Behavioural Brain Research, 1988The long-term effects of the inferior olive destruction on the red nucleus activity, were studied in the rat following injection of 3-acetylpyridine. As soon as the olivary activity was suppressed, the discharge of the rubral units drastically decreased.

The tectorecipient zone in the inferior olivary nucleus in the rat
Journal of Comparative Neurology, 1992AbstractTecto‐olivary and olivocerebellar projections in the rat were investigated in order to identify the tectorecipient zone in the inferior olivary nucleus and to determine whether inferior olivary neurons projecting to the cerebellar tecto‐olivo‐recipient zones (lobule VII, crus II, lobulus simplex, and paramedian lobule) originate in the ...

Effects of cerebellar dentate nucleus GABAergic cells on rat inferior olivary neurons
Neuroreport, 2001The present study was undertaken to analyze the effects on unitary activity of inferior olive (IO) neurons elicited by activation of cerebellar lateral nucleus (LN), in rats submitted to the chronic destruction of MDJ structures, i.e. in animals in which the LN-evoked effects in IO should be depended only on activation of GABAergic cells of LN.

Hypertrophy of the inferior olivary nucleus in corticobasal degeneration: A neuropathological study
Clinical NeuropathologyCorticobasal degeneration (CBD) is a rare neurodegenerative disorder. The status of the inferior olivary nucleus (ION) in CBD has been inadequately investigated. In this study, we conducted a pathological investigation of the ION in CBD.We reviewed the data of Japanese patients with pathologically confirmed CBD who underwent consecutive autopsies ...

Activation of c-fos expression in the rat inferior olivary nucleus by ghrelin
Neuroscience Letters, 2003Ghrelin, a novel 28-amino-acid hormone secreted by gastric oxyntic glands, stimulates food intake and induces adiposity. We examined whether ghrelin activates the inferior olivary nucleus. Systemic administration of ghrelin (37 nmol/kg) induced the expression of c-fos immunoreactivity in inferior olive neurons (n=6 rats).

The direct spinal area of the inferior olivary nucleus: An electron microscopic study
Experimental Brain Research, 1975Identification of the direct spinal areas (portions of the dorsal and medial accessory nuclei) within the opossum inferior olivary complex was accomplished by mapping the location of the terminal degeneration by the Fink-Heimer technique subsequent to cervical cord lesions.

Neuroscience Letters, 1983
Prior to the electron microscopic identification of spino-olivary terminals, the distribution of the direct spino-olivary projection was determined at the light microscopic level. Lesions were placed in the cervical or thoracic spinal cord in 7 rats.

Hypertrophy of the inferior olivary nucleus. A clinico-pathological observation.
Acta neurologica Belgica, 1989The clinico-pathological findings in a 61-year-old man, who suffered from branchial and skeletal myoclonus, appearing six months after a brainstem infarction are reported. Of all the drugs which are usually thought to be effective in the treatment of myoclonus, only valproic acid brought some relief.
