From cities to refuges for pollinators: Urban practices for enhancing pollinator habitats in changing landscapes

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, EarlyView.
A framework for the support of pollinators in urban areas is developed here, based on five pillars: nesting, flower resources, artificial support, management and society acceptance, with additional key elements from science and society. Society should incorporate strategies for pollinators as in this framework by means of co‐planning with stakeholders,

Climatic niche conservatism in non‐native plants is largely dependent on their climatic niche breadth in the native range

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, EarlyView.
Non‐native plants largely occupy similar climatic conditions in their invaded and native range, a pattern that co‐occurred with frequent and mostly small niche shifts. These results largely support the niche conservatism hypothesis. This boosts confidence in predictive models of non‐native plants' spread.

Internal stem decay is not a major source of error for carbon stock estimates in managed temperate forests of Central Europe

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, EarlyView.
Allometric biomass functions can be used for biomass and carbon stock estimates in managed temperate forests of Central Europe, even in stands with high shares of large old trees. It should be tested whether this conclusion is transferable to forests with less or no intensive management in other regions and biomes.

Trends in background mortality in unmanaged forests across Europe over the last century

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, EarlyView.
In contrast to previous studies, dominant tree species in European strict forest reserves have not consistently experienced increasing background mortality. Conversely, forest reserves dominated by competitive species such as beech may have benefitted from warmer growing conditions.

More than fruity scents: Pollination biology, scent, and spectral reflectance of Annonaceae species

open access: yesPlant Species Biology, EarlyView.
We characterised the floral visual and olfactory cues of numerous Annonaceae species and reported their pollinators. We further assessed the olfactory space of most Annonaceae species available in the literature. Abstract The family Annonaceae possesses a broad array of floral phenotypes and pollination specializations, and are important in the plant ...
