Centralizers in Hall’s universal groups and direct limits of finitary symmetric groups

open access: yes, 2014
We study the centralizers of finite subgroups in Hall's universal group. We describe the structure of the centralizers of arbitrary finite subgroups in the groups S(\xi) and FSym(\kappa)(\xi) where S(\xi)'s are obtained as direct limits of finite ...

Infinite-dimensional groups over finite fields and Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions

open access: yes, 2021
The groups mentioned in the title are certain matrix groups of infinite size over a finite field $\mathbb F_q$. They are built from finite classical groups and at the same time they are similar to reductive $p$-adic Lie groups.

Karl Popper and the Mechanisms of Hydrogen Embrittlement

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Representation of the beginning of loss of ductility rather than embrittlement. Small concentrations of hydrogen in a diffusible form within iron are well‐established to harm the mechanical integrity of steels. There are theories that attempt to explain the pernicious role of hydrogen.

The cofinality of the infinite symmetric group and groupwise density

open access: yesJournal of Symbolic Logic, 2003
AbstractWe show that g ≤ c(Sym(ω)) where g is the groupwise density number and c(Sym(ω)) is the cofinality of the infinite symmetric group. This solves (the second half of) a problem addressed by Thomas.

Multimodal Data‐Driven Microstructure Characterization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A self‐consistent autonomous workflow for EBSP‐based microstructure segmentation by integrating PCA, GMM clustering, and cNMF with information‐theoretic parameter selection, requiring no user input. An optimal ROI size related to characteristic grain size is identified.

Some maximal subgroups of infinite symmetric groups

open access: yes, 1990
THIS paper concerns maximal subgroups of symmetric groups on infinite, usually countable, sets. Our main aim is to give examples of maximal subgroups which could claim to be almost stabilisers of familiar ...

Monochrome symmetric subsets of colored groups

open access: yes, 2005
In (Electron. J. Combin. 10 (2003); http://www.combinatorics.org/volume-10/Abstracts/v1oi1r28.html), the first author (Yuliya Gryshko) asked three questions.

Influence of Test Temperature and Test Frequency on Fatigue Life of Aluminum Alloy EN AW‐2618A

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The influence of test temperature and test frequency on the fatigue life of EN AW‐2618A is investigated. High‐cycle fatigue tests are performed at different test temperatures and frequencies on the 1000 h/230°C overaged state. Both test parameters reduce fatigue life due to time‐dependent damage mechanisms.

On generators, relations and D-simplicity of direct products, Byleen extensions, and other semigroup constructions

open access: yes, 2015
In this thesis we study two different topics, both in the context of semigroup constructions. The first is the investigation of an embedding problem, specifically the problem of whether it is possible to embed any given finitely presentable semigroup ...

A classification of certain maximal subgroups of symmetric groups

open access: yes, 2006
Problem 12.82 of the Kourovka Notebook asks for all ordered pairs (n,m) such that the symmetric group Sn embeds in Sm as a maximal subgroup. One family of such pairs is obtained when m=n+1. Kalužnin and Klin [L.A. Kalužnin, M.H.
