The infinitesimal model: Definition, derivation, and implications

open access: yesTheoretical Population Biology, 2017
Our focus here is on the infinitesimal model. In this model, one or several quantitative traits are described as the sum of a genetic and a non-genetic component, the first being distributed within families as a normal random variable centred at the ...

Hypoelliptic Infinitesimal Generators

SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, 1977
In this paper we study semi-group generation by semi-bounded second order differential operators on a noncompact $C^\infty $ manifold. It is shown that the usual regularity assumptions can be relaxed to include hypoelliptic operators of the Hormander type.

Confidence intervals for random forests: the jackknife and the infinitesimal jackknife

Journal of machine learning research, 2013
We study the variability of predictions made by bagged learners and random forests, and show how to estimate standard errors for these methods. Our work builds on variance estimates for bagging proposed by Efron (1992, 2013) that are based on the ...

Leibniz’s syncategorematic infinitesimals

Archive for History of Exact Sciences, 2013
The author shows that Leibniz's mature interpretation of the calculus was fully in accord with the Archimedean axiom: infinitesimals stand for variable finite quantities that can be taken as small as desired (syncategorematic infinitesimals) (Section 2 of the paper).

Infinitesimals in Action

Journal of the London Mathematical Society, 1987
Loeb measures (defined using nonstandard analysis) are used to give a meaning to the flat integral formula for Wiener measure: \[ W(A)=k\int_{A}\exp (-(1/2)\int^{1}_{0}\dot x^ 2dt)d\lambda (x). \] This allows a rigorous derivation of the Cameron-Martin formula along very intuitive lines.

Infinitesimal moduli for the Strominger system and Killing spinors in generalized geometry

, 2015
We construct the space of infinitesimal variations for the Strominger system and an obstruction space to integrability, using elliptic operator theory. We initiate the study of the geometry of the moduli space, describing the infinitesimal structure of a
