Performance of Core Inflation Measures [PDF]

open access: possibleDe Economist, 2001
This paper assesses the performance of core inflation measures based on the structural VAR approach. Since core or monetary inflation is not directly observable, we develop a monetary general equilibrium model that fits real aggregated European data and we use this model to generate time series for headline as well as core inflation. For five different

A Measure of Core Wage Inflation

SSRN Electronic Journal, 2023
We recover the persistent ("core") component of nominal wage growth over the past twenty-five years in the United States. Our approach combines worker-level data with time-series smoothing methods and can disentangle the common persistence of wage inflation from the persistence specific to some subgroup of workers, such as workers in a specific ...

Asset Returns and Measured Inflation

Journal of Money, Credit and Banking, 1994
This paper analyzes the inverse relationship between estimated real returns on assets and estimates of the expected rate of inflation that is commonly noted in the literature. The authors suggest that this puzzling relationship may be produced by an inappropriate application of currently published price indices to the problem of measuring asset returns.

Measurement Of Inflation

1994
In Chapter 3 we introduced the stochastic approach and derived Laspeyres, Paasche and Theil-Tornqvist index numbers and their sampling variances. In this chapter we use the stochastic approach to obtain estimators for the rate of inflation and their sampling variances. As in Chapter 3, we consider the proportionate change in each individual price to be

THE MEASURE OF INFLATION

Economic Affairs, 2004
Different measures of inflation have their pros and cons. Changing the Monetary Policy Committee's inflation target to an inflation measure that excludes housing costs and is not widely used by economic decision‐makers may well be problematic.

Measurement and theory of core inflation

Staff Reports (Federal Reserve Bank of New York)
We discuss the concept of core inflation and its relevance for policymakers and then review a variety of approaches that have been pursued for the construction of informative core measures. After illustrating some empirical patterns displayed by U.S. inflation data and discussing conceptual issues around measurement, we provide a unified framework to ...

Underlying Inflation Measures in Spain. [PDF]

open access: possible, 1999
Applying the concept of underlying inflation can be thought of as an attempt to capture the general trend in inflation more accurately than with readily available data on headline inflation. In this paper a number of approaches to the analysis of underlying inflation are examined from a unifying standpoint, stressing their complementary nature, and ...

Measuring Trend Inflation and Inflation Persistence for India

2016
In this study we propose a new measure of trend inflation for India. Using monthly data for CPI-IW inflation, we use a multivariate unobserved component model that incorporates information from food and energy prices and provides an estimated trend inflation that we argue is a more reasonable measure of long-run inflation expectations in India.
