Fixed-length-parsing universal compression with side information

2017 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory (ISIT), 2017
This paper presents a fixed-length-parsing universal compression algorithm for settings where compressor and decompressor share the same side information. We prove the optimality of the algorithm for any stationary processes. Furthermore, strategies to modify the algorithm are suggested in order to lower the data compression rate.

Estimation of Pendulum Length from Information in Motion

Perception, 1985
One hundred and five college students made estimates of the lengths of freely swinging pendulums mounted in an apparatus that masked all but the top few inches of the pendulum string. The law of pendulum motion shows that visible aspects of pendulum motion uniquely specify the length of the pendulum.

Utilizing soft information in decoding of variable length codes

Proceedings DCC'99 Data Compression Conference (Cat. No. PR00096), 1999
We present a method for utilizing soft information in decoding of variable length codes (VLCs). When compared with traditional VLC decoding, which is performed using "hard" input bits and a state machine, soft-input VLC decoding offers improved performance in terms of packet and symbol error rates.

Information, polarization and term length in democracy

Journal of Public Economics, 2008
Abstract This paper considers term lengths in a representative democracy where the political issue divides the population on the left–right scale. Parties are ideologically different and better informed about the consequences of policies than voters are. A short term length makes the government more accountable, but the re-election incentive leads to

Webpage Fingerprinting using Only Packet Length Information

ICC 2019 - 2019 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC), 2019
Encrypted web traffic can reveal sensitive information of a user, such as their browsing histories. Existing studies on encrypted traffic analysis attacks usually focus on traffic fingerprinting of different websites rather than that of webpages from a same website. Fine-grained webpage fingerprinting allows exploiting more private information of users,

Finger pulse waveform length in the detection of concealed information

International Journal of Psychophysiology, 2006
An attempt was made to assess the efficiency of the finger pulse waveform length (FPWL), in detection of concealed information. For this purpose, two mock-theft experiments were designed. In the first, 40 guilty participants were examined while electrodermal, respiration and finger pulse volume were recorded. Results showed that detection accuracy with

Vessel Enhancement Based on Length-constrained Hessian Information

2018 24th International Conference on Pattern Recognition (ICPR), 2018
Vessel enhancement is an important pre-processing step of applications in vessel image analysis. However, most of the current methods are developed merely based on the intensity variety inside and outside vessel instead of considering the vessel path, which emphasizes the vascular structures via characterizing additional connectivity and length ...

Session Length and Subjective Satisfaction in Information Kiosk Research

1996
Information kiosks introduce a possibility to test usability of computer based services with a large number and a wide variety of users. In this paper, we are interested in evaluating user’s subjective satisfaction, hopefully using automatic log analysis techniques.

Phrase Lengths and the Perceived Informativeness of Prosodic Cues in Turkish

Language and Speech, 2016
It is known from previous studies that in many cases (though not all) the prosodic properties of a spoken utterance reflect aspects of its syntactic structure, and also that in many cases (though not all) listeners can benefit from these prosodic cues. A novel contribution to this literature is the Rational Speaker Hypothesis (RSH), proposed by Clifton,

Information Density and Dependency Length as Complementary Cognitive Models

Journal of Psycholinguistic Research, 2013
Certain English constructions permit two syntactic alternations. (1) a. I looked up the number. b. I looked the number up. (2) a. He is often at the office. b. He often is at the office. This study investigates the relationship between syntactic alternations and processing difficulty. What cognitive mechanisms are responsible for our attraction to some
