Query length in interactive information retrieval
Query length in best-match information retrieval (IR) systems is well known to be positively related to effectiveness in the IR task, when measured in experimental, non-interactive environments. However, in operational, interactive IR systems, query length is quite typically very short, on the order of two to three words.

IMPROVEMENT OF PEDESTRIAN DEAD RECKONING ALGORITHM FOR INDOOR POSITIONING BY USING STEP LENGTH ESTIMATION [PDF]
Pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR) can solve the position information by its inertial measurement unit (IMU), which is a method to achieve indoor autonomous positioning without deploying positioning base stations in advance.

Information Geometry of Nonlinear Stochastic Systems
We elucidate the effect of different deterministic nonlinear forces on geometric structure of stochastic processes by investigating the transient relaxation of initial PDFs of a stochastic variable x under forces proportional to -xn (n=3,5,7) and ...

The increasing demand for Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds requires efficient admission, discharge, and care processes. These efforts require predictions of Length of Stay (LOS) values; however, it is unclear how accurate these predictions need to be. This

Informational masking in word-length auditory patterns [PDF]
Extremely imprecise resolution of the components of word-length tonal sequences, under conditions of high stimulus uncertainty, has led us to reconsider an earlier conclusion about the effective level of the components of such patterns. Watson and Spiegel [J. Acoust. Soc. Am.

Frequency, Informativity and Word Length: Insights from Typologically Diverse Corpora [PDF]
Zipf’s law of abbreviation, which posits a negative correlation between word frequency and length, is one of the most famous and robust cross-linguistic generalizations. At the same time, it has been shown that contextual informativity (average surprisal given previous context) is more strongly correlated with word length, although this tendency is not

In this work, we explore information geometry theoretic measures for characterizing neural information processing from EEG signals simulated by stochastic nonlinear coupled oscillator models for both healthy subjects and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients

When using vector autoregressive (VAR) models for approximating time series, a key step is the selection of the lag length. Often this is performed using information criteria, even if a theoretical justification is lacking in some cases.

Structures in Sound: Analysis of Classical Music Using the Information Length
We show that music is represented by fluctuations away from the minimum path through statistical space. Our key idea is to envision music as the evolution of a non-equilibrium system and to construct probability distribution functions (PDFs) from musical

Textual attributes on integrated reporting quality: Evidence in Asia and Europe
Textual attribute integrated reporting refers to the difficulty level of readability and word length (narrative) of the information disclosed. The conciseness of information requires minimizing the length of words (narrative), offset by the increased ...
