User model-based information filtering
1997The IFT (Information Filtering Tool) project has the goal of developing new approaches to information filtering which are based on user modeling techniques for building and managing the representation of the user information preferences. In this paper we describe three prototypes which have been developed and evaluated within the project.

User information for designers
Proceedings of the 2003 international conference on Designing pleasurable products and interfaces, 2003In this paper, we describe the development of a flexible, visually-based on-line package, based on free sorting and multi-dimensional scaling to help designers research users' emotional and social responses to designed objects.

The melting points given in Table 1 for BCR certified reference materials and repeated with the spectra were determined by Differential Scanning Calorimetry using the same materials as were used for the spectra measurements. The melting points of indium (0.999999 g/g) and lead (0.99999 g/g), were used as references for calibration and the values shown ...

Internal users and internal information
1991In Chapter 10 we discussed external users of information, their information needs and the ways in which they used the accounting information available. This information was derived from the financial reports via the annual accounts of the enterprises being analysed.

Users, user studies and human information behaviour
Journal of Documentation, 2006Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to review Wilson's (1981) seminal article, “On user studies and information needs” (Journal of Documentation, 1981, Vol. 37 No. 1, pp. 3‐15) as part of a series celebrating the Journal's 60th anniversary.Design/methodology/approach – This paper adopts a literature‐based conceptual analysis, taking Wilson's paper ...

Multiple user information theory
Proceedings of the IEEE, 1980A unified framework is given for multiple user information networks. These networks consist of several users communicating to one another in the presence of arbitrary interference and noise. The presence of many senders necessitates a tradeoff in the achievable information transmission rates.

This chapter presents a large set of experimental studies aimed at better understanding aspects of mobile search that differ from classical desktop search. The different role of users and their information needs is certainly a major aspect. Studies based on log analysis are presented first, while more classical users and diary studies are presented in ...

Characterizing environmental information users
Proceedings of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, 2010AbstractThe information seeking and use characteristics of three groups of individuals interested in environmental information are described using a data consolidation technique known in the human‐computer interaction field as “persona”. These user archetypes show differences in the information sources sought, information behaviors shown, and in the ...

User-Oriented Information Retrieval
2013User models of information seeking and retrieval reflect a rich culture of exploring the relationshipns among users, task, and their context. This lecture examines briefly the complex information use environment in which information retrieval systems are situated.
