Infracommunity dynamics of chiggers (Trombiculidae) parasitic on a rodent

open access: yesParasitology, 2015
SUMMARYWe studied the structure of chigger mite (Trombiculidae) communities parasitic on a South African rodent, Rhabdomys pumilio. We aimed to determine whether: (a) different chigger species differ in preferences for certain body areas of a host and (b) chigger assemblages among body areas of the same host individual, are structured and if so ...

Long-term spatiotemporal stability and dynamic changes in helminth infracommunities of spiny mice (Acomys dimidiatus) in St. Katherine’s Protectorate, Sinai, Egypt [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The importance of parasites as a selective force in host evolution is a topic of current interest. However, short-term ecological studies of host-parasite systems, on which such studies are usually based, provide only snap-shots of what may be dynamic ...

On the infracommunity structure of adult cestodes in freshwater fishes

open access: yesParasitology, 1990
The distribution–co-occurrence and exchange of adult cestode species in two fish communities (the Bothnian Bay and Lake Yli-Kitka both in Finland) was studied. Coexistence of two or more mature cestode species in the same fish host population was zero for all fish species studied (33) except pike in the Bothnian Bay and whitefish in the lake.

Scale‐dependent effects of host patch traits on species composition in a stickleback parasite metacommunity

open access: yesEcology, Volume 101, Issue 12, December 2020., 2020
Abstract A core goal of ecology is to understand the abiotic and biotic variables that regulate species distributions and community composition. A major obstacle is that the rules governing species distributions can change with spatial scale. Here, we illustrate this point using data from a spatially nested metacommunity of parasites infecting a ...

High parasite diversity in the amphipod Gammarus lacustris in a subarctic lake

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 10, Issue 21, Page 12385-12394, November 2020., 2020
We set out to identify and quantify the parasite community of Gammarus lacustris to understand the contributions of the amphipod and its parasites to the Takvatn food web. We identified seven parasite taxa: a direct life cycle gregarine, Rotundula sp., and larval stages of two digenean trematode genera, two cestodes, one nematode, and one ...

Diversity and community ecology of metazoan parasites in Pimelodus ornatus (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) from the Amazonas River in Brazil

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Parasitologia Veterinária, 2021
The present study investigated the metazoan parasite community in Pimelodus ornatus from the Amazon River, in the state of Amapá (Brazil). Of 71 fish examined, 70.4% were parasitized by Demidospermus sp.

Ontogenetic Variation in Parasite infracommunities of the Clingfish Sicyases sanguineus (Pisces: Gobiesocidae)

open access: yesJournal of Parasitology, 2011
This study analyzed the variation of the parasite infracommunities and their relationship with the diet and spatial distribution of the clingfish Sicyases sanguineus during its ontogeny. In total, 154 clingfish were collected from the intertidal and the upper subtidal zone of Pacific Ocean along the central Chilean coast. A wide range in body length (1.

Food nutrient availability affects epibiont prevalence and richness in natural Daphnia populations

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 65, Issue 10, Page 2529-2540, October 2020., 2020
Abstract The increased input of nutrients into biological systems has been shown to result in altered biotic interactions through changes in food availability. The aim of this study was to test for an association between phytoplankton nutrient content and epibiont variables in natural zooplankton populations.

Host patch traits have scale‐dependent effects on diversity in a stickleback parasite metacommunity

open access: yesEcography, Volume 43, Issue 7, Page 990-1002, July 2020., 2020
Many metacommunities are distributed across habitat patches that are themselves aggregated into groups. Perhaps the clearest example of this nested metacommunity structure comes from multi‐species parasite assemblages, which occupy individual hosts that are aggregated into host populations. At both spatial scales, we expect parasite community diversity
