Temporal stability of polymorphic Arctic charr parasite communities reflects sustained divergent trophic niches

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 12, Issue 11, November 2022., 2022
Our study showed that anthropogenic modification of the fish community can result in changes to the parasite fauna in the system, with the establishment of new species and varying levels of infection of native parasites over time. However, our model hosts were able to maintain their trimorphic population despite changes in the fish community.

Analysis of the helminth community of Notothenia coriiceps (Actinopterygii: Nototheniidae) collected in the water area of the Argentine Islands, West Antarctica

open access: yesУкраїнський антарктичний журнал, 2022
Helminth community of the Antarctic black rockcod, Notothenia coriiceps, was examined using the fish samples collected in 2014—2015 (106 specimens) and 2020—2021 (78 specimens) in the water area of the Argentine Islands, West Antarctica. In total, 30,951

Weighing the predictors: host traits and coinfecting species both explain variation in parasitism of Rock Ptarmigan

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 12, Issue 8, August 2021., 2021
Abstract Testing hypotheses in ecological and evolutionary parasitology can require testing whether host traits or coinfecting parasites explain variation in parasitism by focal species. However, when host traits and coinfecting parasites are considered separately, relations between either and parasitism by focal species can be spurious—a problem that ...

Important questions to progress science and sustainable management of anguillid eels

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, Volume 22, Issue 4, Page 762-788, July 2021., 2021
Abstract Anguillid eels are found globally in fresh, transitional and saline waters and have played an important role in human life for centuries. The population status of several species is now of significant concern. The threats to populations include direct exploitation at different life stages, blockages to migratory routes by dams and other ...

Structure of the metazoan parasite communities of haemulid fish (Actinopterygii: Perciformes) in the South Atlantic Ocean: a comparative approach [PDF]

open access: yesAnais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências, 2022
Haemulidae represents one of the most diverse, widespread and conspicuous families of Perciformes, in which most species are marine, some brackish and rarely from freshwater. From April 2009 to July 2012, 120 specimens of Conodon nobilis, 60 Orthopristis

Metazoan Parasite Infracommunities in Five Sciaenids from the Central Peruvian Coast [PDF]

open access: yesMemórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 1998
Parasitological analysis of 237 Menticirrhus ophicephalus, 124 Paralonchurus peruanus, 249 Sciaena deliciosa, 50 Sciaena fasciata and 308 Stellifer minor from Callao (Perú) yielded 37 species of metazoan parasites (14 Monogenea, 11 Copepoda, 4 Nematoda, 3 Acanthocephala, 1 Digenea, 1 Aspidobothrea, 1 Eucestoda, 1 Isopoda and 1 Hirudinea).

Infracommunity dynamics of chiggers (Trombiculidae) parasitic on a rodent

open access: yesParasitology, 2015
SUMMARYWe studied the structure of chigger mite (Trombiculidae) communities parasitic on a South African rodent, Rhabdomys pumilio. We aimed to determine whether: (a) different chigger species differ in preferences for certain body areas of a host and (b) chigger assemblages among body areas of the same host individual, are structured and if so ...

Helminth metacommunity of small mammals in a Brazilian reserve: the contribution of environmental variables, host attributes and spatial variables in parasite species abundance [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
The role of environmental factors and landscape heterogeneity on species distribution on different spatial scales is one of the most important questions in community ecology. Variations in the environmental gradient characteristics, host attributes and

On the infracommunity structure of adult cestodes in freshwater fishes

open access: yesParasitology, 1990
The distribution–co-occurrence and exchange of adult cestode species in two fish communities (the Bothnian Bay and Lake Yli-Kitka both in Finland) was studied. Coexistence of two or more mature cestode species in the same fish host population was zero for all fish species studied (33) except pike in the Bothnian Bay and whitefish in the lake.
