The Phosphoglycerate Kinase (PGK) Gene Family of Maize (Zea mays var. B73)

open access: yesPlants, 2020
Phosphoglycerate kinase (PGK, E.C. 2.7.2.3) interconverts ADP + 1,3-bisphospho-glycerate (1,3-bPGA) to ATP + 3-phosphoglycerate (3PGA). While most bacteria have a single pgk gene and mammals possess two copies, plant genomes contain three or more PGK ...

Targeting CRM1 for Progeria Syndrome Therapy

open access: yesAging Cell, Volume 24, Issue 5, May 2025.
Pharmacological inhibition of CRM1 mediated by selinexor, the first‐in‐class selective inhibitor of CRM1, mitigates the senescent phenotype of Hutchinson‐Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS) patients‐derived primary fibroblasts. Treatment of HGPS fibroblasts with selinexor promotes the clearances of progerin via autophagy activation, restores the ...

Microbial Communities in Agave Fermentations Vary by Local Biogeographic Regions

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 17, Issue 1, February 2025.
We performed a country‐wide metabarcoding analysis of the microbial communities associated with the fermentations used for the production of artisanal agave spirits in Mexico. Despite the biogeographic and cultural differences of the producing sites, we identified a core of bacteria and fungi that are common in most fermentations.

Thriving in Adversity: Yeasts in the Agave Fermentation Environment

open access: yesYeast, Volume 42, Issue 1-3, Page 16-30, January 2025.
Three key players interacting in the agave fermentation environment: humans, agave plants, and microbes. Human selection of agaves with specific traits, combined with fermentation practices, may have created an environment that fosters the development of adaptive traits in certain microbial species, enabling them to thrive in the unique and challenging

Central Dopamine D2 Receptors Regulate Growth-HormoneDependent Body Growth and Pheromone Signaling to Conspecific Males [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Competition between adult males for limited resources such as food and receptive females is shaped by the male pattern of pituitary growth hormone (GH) secretion that determines body size and the production of urinary pheromones involved in male-to-male ...

Phylogenetic conservatism in the relationship between functional and demographic characteristics in Amazon tree taxa

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 1, Page 181-198, January 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Leaf and wood functional traits of trees are related to growth, reproduction, and survival, but the degree of phylogenetic conservatism in these relationships is largely unknown.
