Timing matters for farmland breeding waders: Aligning agri‐environment exclusion periods with species‐ and latitude‐specific nesting phenology

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 9, September 2026.
We propose an evidence‐based system that prescribes context‐specific exclusion dates based on three simple criteria: target species, latitude and agricultural activity. This framework would allow policy to account for complex phenological variation, significantly improving breeding outcomes, while remaining administratively manageable and scalable.

Molecular basis of an agarose metabolic pathway acquired by a human intestinal symbiont

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
Polysaccharides are the primary structural cell wall and energy storage molecules of seaweed. Here, the authors show how the geographically restricted dietary polysaccharide agarose is selectively utilized by the human intestinal bacterium Bacteroides ...

How do supermarkets shape the experience of vulnerable people in Australia's food system? A scoping review

open access: yesNutrition &Dietetics, Volume 83, Issue 4, Page 490-514, September 2026.
Abstract Aims The aim of this scoping review was to synthesise how supermarkets shape health behaviours and nutrition‐related outcomes of vulnerable populations in Australia. Methods Five databases were searched and studies were included if they discussed Australia's major supermarket chains, their relationship with vulnerable populations, and outcomes

Architected Glass‐Ceramics

open access: yesJournal of the American Ceramic Society, Volume 109, Issue 9, September 2026.
Controlled crystallization converts a precursor glass into a glass‐ceramic comprising crystalline phases embedded within a residual glass matrix. When crystal size, refractive‐index mismatch, and phase assemblage are carefully controlled, optical transparency can be retained by minimizing light scattering.

On the adaptive significance of group III/IV muscle afferent feedback for the cardiovascular response during sustained locomotion in humans

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, Volume 604, Issue 17, Page 7112-7124, 1 September 2026.
Abstract figure legend Group III/IV leg muscle afferent feedback has previously been recognized as an important determinant of the cardiovascular response to exercise lasting <5 min. Here we demonstrate that the activity of these neurons is crucial in regulating central and peripheral haemodynamic responses during steady state exercise of longer ...
