On the modelling of initial geometric imperfections of steel frames in advanced analysis

Journal of Constructional Steel Research, 2014
Abstract Steel structural members and frames always indicate imperfections to various degrees. These include initial out-of-straightness and initial out-of-plumb due to manufacturing and erection tolerances. In general, the shape and magnitude of geometric imperfections may have a significant influence on the response of a structure, and hence need ...

Prediction of the initial geometric imperfection magnitudes for numerical modeling of cold-formed steel channel sections

open access: yesStructures
CFS members are prone to geometric imperfections due to their slenderness, even if the observed imperfections are minor. The main aims of this study are to gather imperfection magnitudes reported in the literature to propose a new set of simple ...

Effects of Initial Geometric Imperfections on Parametric Instability of Rectangular Plates

Volume 6B: 18th Biennial Conference on Mechanical Vibration and Noise, 2001
Abstract The authors present a rational analysis of the effect of initial geometric imperfections on the dynamic behaviour of rectangular plates activated by a parametric excitation. This subject has been extensively investigated theoretically in the past, but no experimental data seems to be complete enough to validate the theory.

Effects of initial geometric imperfections on dynamic behavior of rectangular plates

Nonlinear Dynamics, 1992
The present work deals with the influence of initial geometric imperfections on the dynamic behavior of simply supported rectangular plates subjected to the action of periodic in-plane forces. The nonlinear large-deflection plate theory used in this analysis corresponds to the dynamic analog of von Karman's theory.

Structural performance of a gossamer isogrid column with initial geometric imperfections

19th AIAA Applied Aerodynamics Conference, 2001
This paper reports on the experimental study and analysis of a novel gossamer structural component. The component is a 3 m long thin-walled isogrid column prototype which may be elastically stowed and deployed. The static and dynamic mechanical response of the deployed prototype is examined and compared to an idealized model.

A Parametric Study on Geometrically Nonlinear Analysis of Initially Imperfect Shallow Spherical Shells

Journal of Elastomers & Plastics, 2008
Geometrically nonlinear analysis of initially imperfect shallow spherical shells under uniformly distributed axisymmetrical load is investigated in this computational study. The thickness of the shell is considered to be uniform and the material is assumed to be isotropic.

Practical Advanced Design Considering Random Distribution of Initial Geometric Imperfections

Advances in Structural Engineering, 2011
Current advanced analysis and design of steel frames, allows for the most unfavorable combination of initial imperfections. In fact, however, the initial geometric imperfections and their combinations are all random distributions. Recognising this situation, the sway installation tolerances and bow imperfections of both columns and beams are all ...

Collapse of semi-rigidly jointed reticulated domes with initial geometric imperfections

Journal of Constructional Steel Research, 1998
Abstract Buckling collapse and its analytical method of steel reticulated domes with semi-rigid ball joints are discussed, on the basis of a nonlinear elastic–plastic hinge analysis formulated for three-dimensional beam-columns with elastic perfectly plastic hinges located at both ends and the mid-span for each member.
