Buckling Analysis of Long Booms with Initial Geometric Imperfections
45th AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics & Materials Conference, 2004Long, thin-walled booms are basic building elements of ultra-light-weight space inflatable structures. Buckling of long booms is critical to the performance and reliability of such space structures. Due to fabrication and packaging process, long booms of a space inflatable structure may have geometric and material imperfections. These imperfections can

On the Choice of Initial Geometric Imperfections in Externally Pressurized Shells
Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology, 1999Localized and global, of eigenmode type, initial geometric imperfections were superimposed on perfect torispherical, ellipsoidal, and toroidal shells of circular and elliptical cross section. Reduction of the load-carrying capacity was then calculated numerically for various geometries and the yield point of material which was assumed to be mild steel.

Journal of Sound and Vibration, 1994
Abstract The influence of initial geometric imperfections on the response of simply supported rectangular plates subjected to periodic in-plane forces is theoretically analyzed in this work. The large deflection plate theory used in the analysis is derived in terms of the stress function F and lateral displacement W .

Free vibrations of a certain geometrically nonlinear system with initial imperfection
AIAA Journal, 1990The equations of motion of a beam are assumed within the framework of the moderately large bending theory. The effects of an initial imperfection and amplitude on the nonlinear vibration frequency and value of axial internal force in a beam are presented.

Buckling of thin-walled columns accounting for initial geometrical imperfections
International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics, 2017The paper is devoted to the effect of some geometrical imperfections on the critical buckling load of axially compressed thin-walled I-columns. The analytical formulas for the critical torsional and flexural buckling loads accounting for the initial curvature of the column axis or the twist angle respectively are derived.

Effects of Initial Geometric Imperfections on Parametric Instability of Rectangular Plates
Volume 6B: 18th Biennial Conference on Mechanical Vibration and Noise, 2001Abstract The authors present a rational analysis of the effect of initial geometric imperfections on the dynamic behaviour of rectangular plates activated by a parametric excitation. This subject has been extensively investigated theoretically in the past, but no experimental data seems to be complete enough to validate the theory.

Structural performance of a gossamer isogrid column with initial geometric imperfections
19th AIAA Applied Aerodynamics Conference, 2001This paper reports on the experimental study and analysis of a novel gossamer structural component. The component is a 3 m long thin-walled isogrid column prototype which may be elastically stowed and deployed. The static and dynamic mechanical response of the deployed prototype is examined and compared to an idealized model.

Mechanics of Advanced Materials and Structures, 2013
This article deals with the geometrically nonlinear transient response of functionally graded (FG) shell panels in thermal environments having initial geometric imperfection. The theoretical formulation considers Sanders’ approximation for doubly curved shells and von Karman type nonlinear stresses are incorporated into the first order shear ...

Geometrically nonlinear analysis of initially imperfect shallow spherical shells under uniformly distributed axisymmetrical load is investigated in this computational study. The thickness of the shell is considered to be uniform and the material is assumed to be isotropic.

Effects of Initial Geometric Imperfection on Stability of Single-Layer Reticulated Shell
Advanced Materials Research, 2011The stability of reticulated shell is a key issue for single-layer reticulated shell. In the paper, a single-layer arch-supported shell structure was analyzed by finite element software MIDAS. The eigenvalue buckling analysis and the geometric nonlinear overall stability analysis with initial imperfection of the model which carried two different load ...
