Multiple Shooting Method for Initial Satellite Orbit Determination
Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics, 2010After a satellite has been launched, the determination of its initial orbit is one of the primary tasks to be accomplished by mission control: e.g., in order to prepare for high-precision orbit determination or orbital transfers. For this purpose, tracking measurements are acquired by ground stations, which are the basis for the determination of the ...

Initial Orbit Determination Results for Jason-1: Towards a 1 cm Orbit
Navigation, 2003The U.S/France Jason-1 oceanographic mission is carrying state-of-the-art radiometric tracking systems (GPS and Doris) to support precise orbit determination (POD) requirements. The performance of the systems is strongly reflected in the early POD results.

Correlation of Optical Observations of Earth-Orbiting Objects and Initial Orbit Determination
Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics, 2012For optical observations of Earth-orbiting objects, multiple observationsmust be combined to determine the orbit of the observed object.Whether two arbitrary tracks are of the same object, however, is generally unknown a priori, and solving this problem with traditional approaches requires iterative procedures that do not guarantee convergence.

Angles-Only, Ground-Based, Initial Orbit Determination
1984Abstract : Over the past few years, passive, ground-based, angles-only initial orbit determination has hd a thorough analytical, numerical, experimental, and creative re-examination. This report presents the numerical culmination of this effort and contains specific recommendations for which of several techniques one should use on the different subsets

Direct Uncertainty Estimates from Angles-Only Initial Orbit Determination
Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics, 2018Initial orbit determination methods yield only a point solution, with no information about the quality of or confidence in the solution.

Initial orbit determination results for the LARES satellite [PDF]
LARES (LAser RElativity Satellite) is a laser-ranged satellite deployed by the Italian Space Agency (ASI). It is a spherical satellite covered with 92 retro-re ectors with a radius of 182 mm. Made of tungsten alloy, its weight is 387 kg, making it likely the highest mean density body in the Solar System.

Dealing with Uncertainties in Initial Orbit Determination
2016A method to deal with uncertainties in initial orbit determination (IOD) is presented. This is based on the use of Taylor differential algebra (DA) to nonlinearly map the observation uncertainties from the observation space to the state space. When a minimum set of observations is available, DA is used to expand the solution of the IOD problem in ...
