Initial stress symmetry and its applications in elasticity [PDF]
An initial stress within a solid can arise to support external loads or from processes such as thermal expansion in inert matter or growth and remodelling in living materials. For this reason, it is useful to develop a mechanical framework of initially stressed solids irrespective of how this stress formed.

Dynamics of Initially Stressed Hyperelastic Solids
ZAMM - Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics / Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 1979AbstractThis investigation presents a linear, three‐dimensional theory for the incremental motion of initially stressed, hyperelastic solids. The magnitude of the initial deformation and the form of the strain energy density function are both arbitrary except for the usual restrictions placed on them by the principles of mechanics and thermodynamics. Theory of Vibration of Initially Stressed Shells
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1972Governing equations are derived for an initially stressed shell undergoing an infinitesimal elastic process in which transverse shear and normal strains are accounted for. The point of view is adopted that this process begins with the initially stressed state for which geometry, state of stress, and material properties are known.

Initiation of lactation in rats by nonspecific stresses
American Journal of Physiology-Legacy Content, 1960Sixty mature, virgin female rats were divided into six groups of 10 each and injected subcutaneously for 10 days with 10 µg estradiol in 0.1 cc corn oil. For the following 5 days the groups were treated as follows: 1) controls, 0.1 cc saline injected subcutaneously once daily; 2) severe cold (0°C) 24 hr/day; 3) intense light and heat for 12 hr/day; 4)

VIBRATION OF INITIALLY STRESSED MICRO- AND NANO-BEAMS
International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics, 2007This paper is concerned with the vibration problem of initially stressed micro/nano-beams. The vibration problem is formulated on the basis of Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory and the Timoshenko beam theory. The small scale effect is taken into consideration in the former theory while the effects of initial stress, transverse shear deformation and

The Influence of Initial Stresses on Blood Vessel Mechanics
Journal of Mechanics in Medicine and Biology, 2003In order to account for the in vivo conditions of blood vessels, we investigate the mechanical behavior of a stressed tube-like membrane when small deformations are superimposed on large deformations: the latter simulate the stretches present in the in vivo arteries while the superimposed deformations account for the small — but essential for the blood

Thermoelastic stresses in initially stressed bodies
Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series A. Mathematical and Physical Sciences, 1962Abstract A general theory is presented for small thermoelastic deformations in a body which has already been subjected to an elastic deformation and which was initially aeolotropic. Two special cases are examined in detail. The first is concerned with small thermoelastic deformations in a body which is under initial stress, the state ...

On Incremental Deformations of Initially Stressed Media with Couple Stresses
Journal of the Franklin Institute, 1978Abstract A two-dimensional theory for the incremental deformations of an initially stressed continuum with couple stresses is established in this paper. As applications of theory, the problems of internal instability and wave propagation are studied. It is found that the otherwise non-dispersive waves become dispersive, and additional local modes of ...

Initiation of microspore embryogenesis by stress
Trends in Plant Science, 1997Microspores have the remarkable capacity to develop into haploid plants via embryogenesis in vitro . Stress treatment acts as a trigger for inducing this sporophytic pathway, preventing the development of fertile pollen (gametophytic pathway). The doubled haploids generated are completely homozygous, and represent an important tool for research in ...

An examination of initial stresses in hoppers
Chemical Engineering Science, 1994Abstract Initial stresses, the stresses during filling and before discharging, measured in an experimental silo have been compared to stresses calculated with slice element methods (Walters, Motzkus). With the approach of Motzkus, initial stresses can be predicted fairly good, whereas Walters' approach yields an overestimation of the vertical ...
