Modelling inland terminal locations based on transport cost optimisation

International Journal of Shipping and Transport Logistics, 2020
The position of inland terminal in transportation network depends on several elements. Selection of these elements has significant influence on its final location. This paper presents the quantitative method to define the optimal location of inland terminal in a node of railway network, primarily based on transportation cost savings.

Crane scheduling method for train reloading at inland intermodal container terminal

2012 IEEE 10th Jubilee International Symposium on Intelligent Systems and Informatics, 2012
The increase of the volume of containerized goods in the worldwide trade imposes the need for the analysis and improvement of all aspects of container transport logistic chains, and therefore also the organization of inland intermodal terminals and the mechanization for reloading of containers from ships (barges), trains and trucks. This paper analyzes

Cargo prioritization and terminal allocation problem for inland waterway disruptions

Maritime Economics and Logistics, 2017
To mitigate inland waterway disruption impacts, we introduce the cargo prioritization and terminal allocation problem (CPTAP) to minimize the total value loss of disrupted barge cargoes. CPTAP is formulated as a nonlinear binary integer program, and problems of realistic size can be efficiently and effectively solved with a genetic algorithm approach ...

An Exploration of the Inland Terminal Markets in the EU

SSRN Electronic Journal, 2013
This paper analyses structures of the inland terminal markets that constitutes one of the main parts of the intermodal freight transport supply chains markets, by developing two different heuristic approaches to define the market. The main questions that this paper will answer are: 1. how can the terminal market be defined, 2.

Optimization of container operations at inland intermodal terminals

2017 5th IEEE International Conference on Models and Technologies for Intelligent Transportation Systems (MT-ITS), 2017
The paper deals with the problem of minimizing reshuffling of containers in an inland intermodal terminal. The problem is tackled according to a simulation-optimization approach. A simulation model computes the operational costs of containers, related to storage and pick-up operations in an inland yard.

Towards an ‘inland terminal centred’ value proposition

Maritime Policy & Management, 2014
The two main value propositions in international container transport are ‘port-to-port’ services and ‘door-to-door’ services. In port-to-port services, buyers ‘just’ purchase maritime transport from a shipping line. Door-to-door services comprise the total transport chain and include land-based transport. Carriers as well as forwarders offer these door-

Inland container terminal—function and rationale

Maritime Policy & Management, 1980
Increasing commercial and recreational pressures on urban waterfront lands, growing demand by seaports for back-up areas and changes in cargo-distribution concepts have caused the relocation of several port functions and the establishment of inland container terminals.

Automated container transport system between inland port and terminals

ACM Transactions on Modeling and Computer Simulation, 2006
In this article we propose a new concept called automated container transportation system between inland port and terminals (ACTIPOT) which involves the use of automated trucks to transfer containers between an inland port and container terminals. The inland port is located a few miles away from the terminals and is used for storing and processing ...

Where Supply Meets Demand: The Spatial Location of Inland Terminals

Journal of Transport Economics and Policy, 2015
Location patterns of intermodal terminals can be explained as the result of a spatial market process. The market equilibrium condition is deduced from a monopolistic competition model that can also be used to describe cluster formation. Depending on demand density, local markets are characterised by spatial or aspatial monopolistic competition ...

Inland Intermodal Terminals Location Criteria Evaluation: The Case of Croatia

Transportation Journal, 2015
Abstract Determining a suitable location for an intermodal terminal is a critical element of the terminal establishment process, a decision on which the functionality of the entire intermodal freight distribution chain depends. The purpose of this article is to evaluate the criteria used for deciding on suitable locations for intermodal ...
