Abstract Inland waterway transport plays a significant role in the transport of goods within the European Union. The European Union waterway network comprises more than 37,000 kilometres of waterways and connects hundreds of cities and industrial regions. Of Member States, twenty-one out of twenty-eight have inland waterways.
