Inlet Flow Distortion

2018
In this chapter we discuss the phenomenon of inlet flow distortion and how to model its effect on engine stability and performance. We explain why circumferential distortion is more important than radial distortion and the background to the suitability of the pressure distortion coefficient, DC60, as a descriptor.

Fan Performance Scaling With Inlet Distortions

Volume 2A: Turbomachinery, 2016
Applications such as boundary-layer-ingesting fans, and compressors in turboprop engines require continuous operation with distorted inflow. A low-speed axial fan with incompressible flow is studied in this paper. Previous work in the literature has shown that the same flow mechanisms contributing to the response of a fan to distortion are at play in ...

Inlet airflow distortion in turbomachinery

Zeitschrift für angewandte Mathematik und Physik ZAMP, 1972
The attenuation of an inlet flow distortion in a single stage mixed flow compressor is calculated. Use is made of a modified actuator disc theory. The case where the axial gaps are very small is considered in particular.

Interpolation Methods for Inlet Distortion Determination

54th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting, 2016
Inlet flow distortion is a major factor in inlet design; distortion indicates the amount of fluctuation in a flow and translates directly into the breadth of the engine’s operating envelope. ARP1420 is the standard governing inlet distortion testing which gives guidance on how to collect total pressure data at the engine face but is silent on how that ...

Numerical Investigation of Inlet Distortion on an Axial Flow Compressor Rotor with Circumferential Groove Casing Treatment

open access: yesChinese Journal of Aeronautics, 2008
On the base of an assumed steady inlet circumferential total pressure distortion, three-dimensional time-dependent numerical simulations are conducted on an axial flow subsonic compressor rotor.

The Cascade Subjected to Inlet Distortions

Aeronautical Quarterly, 1968
SummaryThis paper presents a method for evaluating the effects of shear flow on the performance of a two-dimensional cascade in an incompressible fluid. The method of distributing the singularities along the chord is modified to meet the requirement that the sum of the distorted and perturbed velocities should produce a flow around the aerofoil ...

Fan Performance Scaling With Inlet Distortions

Journal of Turbomachinery, 2018
Applications such as boundary-layer-ingesting (BLI) fans and compressors in turboprop engines require continuous operation with distorted inflow. A low-speed axial fan with incompressible flow is studied in this paper. The objectives are to (1) identify the physical mechanisms which govern the fan response to inflow distortions and (2) determine how ...

Circumferential Inlet Distortions in Axial Flow Turbomachinery

Journal of the Aeronautical Sciences, 1957
An actuator disc type of analysis is carried out to determine the effect of a nonuniformity in the circumferential velocity profile entering an axial flow stage of turbomachinery. The analysis is restricted to study of incompressible, inviscid flow with the assumption of hub/ t ip ratios close to unity reducing the problem to two dimensions ...

Effects of Rotating Inlet Distortion on Multisage Compressor Stability

Volume 1: Turbomachinery, 1994
In multi-spool engines, rotating stall in an upstream compressor will impose a rotating distortion on the downstream compressor, thereby affecting its stability margin. In this paper experiments are described in which this effect was simulated by a rotating screen upstream of several multistage low-speed compressors.

A remark concerning engine-inlet distortion.

Journal of Aircraft, 1968
T effect of inlet d'stortion on axial compressor performance is both a current and complex problem. During the past 15 years the problem has been tackled by many investigators at both a practical engineering level and, for certain simplified geometries, at a sophisticated mathematical level.
