AbstractWe discuss the question whether inner core (IC) differential rotation or temporal change of the IC surface provides a consistent interpretation for temporal changes of the IC‐related phases and their coda. While temporal change of the IC surface is required and provides a consistent explanation to all the seismic observations, we present three ...

Inner core attenuation anisotropy
Earth and Planetary Science Letters, 2006Abstract We investigate the attenuation structure of the Earth's inner core and its relationship to the velocity structure globally and along various sampling directions, by studying the amplitude ratios and the differential travel times of the PKiKP–PKIKP and PKPbc–PKIKP phases. Our observations reveal that the amplitude ratios of these core phases,

Elastic Anisotropy of Earth's Inner Core
Science, 2008Earth's solid-iron inner core is elastically anisotropic. Sound waves propagate faster along Earth's spin axis than in the equatorial plane. This anisotropy has previously been explained by a preferred orientation of the iron alloy hexagonal crystals. However, hexagonal iron becomes increasingly isotropic on increasing temperature at pressures of the ...

Lopsided Growth of Earth's Inner Core
Science, 2010Clearing Up the Inner Core The behavior of Earth's core controls the planet's heat budget and magnetic field, yet its structure remains enigmatic. For instance, the seismic properties of the solid inner core suggest hemispherical structural asymmetry, but questions remain as to how these variations arose (see the Perspective by

Dynamics of the inner core wobble under mantle‐inner core gravitational interactions
Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 2017AbstractWe investigate the dynamics of the inner core wobble (ICW), the Euler‐Liouville wobbling motion of the Earth's solid inner core, under the mantle‐inner core gravitational (MICG) torques within the Earth. Chao (2016) derived the full 3‐D equation of motion for the MICG dynamics in terms of the spherical‐harmonic multipoles of mass density and ...

Viscosity Near Earth's Solid Inner Core
Science, 1999Anomalous splitting of the two equatorial translational modes of oscillation of Earth's solid inner core is used to estimate the effective viscosity just outside its boundary. Superconducting gravimeter observations give periods of 3.5822 ± 0.0012 (retrograde) and 4.0150 ± 0.0010 (prograde) hours.
