A Primer on the Inner Workings of Transformer-based Language Models

open access: yesCoRR
The rapid progress of research aimed at interpreting the inner workings of advanced language models has highlighted a need for contextualizing the insights gained from years of work in this area. This primer provides a concise technical introduction to the current techniques used to interpret the inner workings of Transformer-based language models ...

Texoskeletons: Developing the Fundamental Technologies for Creating Intelligent Soft Robotic Clothing With Integrated 1D Sensors and Actuators

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Traditional wearable exoskeletons rely on rigid structures, which limit comfort, flexibility, and everyday usability. This work introduces the fundamental technologies to create the first soft, lightweight, intelligent textile‐based exoskeletons (Texoskeletons) built using 1D sensors and actuators.

WARP: Guaranteed Inner-Layer Repair of NLP Transformers

open access: yesCoRR
Transformer-based NLP models remain vulnerable to adversarial perturbations, yet existing repair methods face a fundamental trade-off: gradient-based approaches offer flexibility but lack verifiability and often overfit; methods that do provide repair guarantees are restricted to the final layer or small networks, significantly limiting the parameter ...

Prescribing inner parts of derivatives of inner functions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Let ℐ be the set of inner functions whose derivative lies in the Nevanlinna class. We show that up to a post-composition with a Möbius transformation, an inner function F ∈ ℐ is uniquely determined by the inner part of its derivative.

Carbonate accelerates while humic acid inhibits ferrihydrite transformation in soil: kinetics and mechanisms of As and Pb sequestration under fluctuating redox conditions

open access: yesSoil & Environmental Health
Understanding how common soil constituents regulate iron oxide transformation is essential for predicting the stability of co-occurring Pb and As under dynamic conditions.

Dual‐Mode Magnetic Elastomer for On‐Demand Motion and Degradation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A dual‐mode magnetic elastomer is introduced, enabling DC field‐driven programmable actuation and AC field‐driven magnetothermal degradation. GHz‐range magnetic fields generate ultrafast heating of magnetic nanoparticles that activates cleavage of the silicone elastomer matrix.

Insights into the inner workings of transformer models for protein function prediction

open access: yesBioinformatics
AbstractMotivationWe explored how explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) can help to shed light into the inner workings of neural networks for protein function prediction, by extending the widely used XAI method of integrated gradients such that latent representations inside of transformer models, which were finetuned to Gene Ontology term and ...

Inner-city transformation between reurbanization and gentrification: Leipzig, eastern Germany

open access: yes, 2015
After the beginning of the post-socialist transformation, the eastern German city of Leipzig underwent various changes within a short time span. These changes have been especially dynamic in its inner city.

Dipole‐Engineered Conductive Additives for Ultrastable Interphase Evolution in High‐Areal‐Capacity Silicon Anodes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In the work reported herein, dipole‐engineered sulfonated carbon nanofibers enable conductive additives to actively regulate interphase formation in silicon anodes. Polar sulfonyl groups guide electrolyte decomposition to form a compact LiF‐rich interphase while promoting robust integration with silicon.
