Microbial influence on the formation and subsequent changes of vertebrate tracks: field experiments on present‐day coastal sediments

open access: yesSedimentology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The presence of microbial mats is often invoked to explain the good preservation of vertebrate tracks, because they can cover and biostabilize such structures. However, microbial influence on the sediment properties when the track is made and on the track characteristics has not been so thoroughly analysed.

Pinopsin Regulates Melatonin Production and Daily Locomotor Activity: Functional Insights From Gene‐Edited Xenopus Tadpoles

open access: yesJournal of Pineal Research, Volume 78, Issue 2, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Circadian rhythm alignment depends on environmental light detection via opsins. Pinopsin, originally identified in the pineal organ of birds and later in amphibian pineal complex and eyes, may play a role in this process, though its function has not been genetically tested.

From Light‐Driven to Dark Synthesis: Streamlining Perfluoroalkyl Selenide Ether Formation

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Organic Chemistry, Volume 29, Issue 5, 7 February 2026.
Two orthogonal and user‐friendly protocols enable the efficient construction of (Se/S)RF bonds from simple dichalcogenides and perfluoroalkyl iodides. Visible‐light irradiation at 395 nm promotes seleno‐ and thioether formation, while a dark KOH/MeCN variant delivers selenoethers in minutes. Both approaches operate under mild, metal‐ and photocatalyst‐

The Gut Microbiota as a Mediator in the Relationship Between Dietary Patterns and Depression

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 2, February 2026.
Healthy dietary patterns are associated with gut microbial genera linked to lower depressive symptoms. In 644 older adults from the PREDIMED‐Plus cohort, 16S rRNA sequencing and dietary scoring revealed that taxa associated with a better diet quality were also more abundant in individuals with fewer depressive symptoms.

Automated item‐level measures of verbal fluency in semantic and logopenic primary progressive aphasia

open access: yesAlzheimer's &Dementia, Volume 22, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract INTRODUCTION Verbal fluency tasks are widely used in primary progressive aphasia (PPA), but most studies rely only on total correct responses, overlooking qualitative features of the words produced. We applied a scalable computational framework to extract item‐level features from fluency responses in semantic variant (svPPA) and logopenic ...

Unifying microorganisms and macrograzers in intertidal rocky shore ecological networks

open access: yesEcology, Volume 107, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract Over the past decades, our understanding of the vital role microbes play in ecosystem processes has greatly expanded. However, we still have limited knowledge about how microbial communities interact with larger organisms. Many existing representations of microbial interactions are based on co‐occurrence patterns, which do not provide clear ...
