This article presents the harmonic analysis of transformer inrush currents in offshore power systems. Offshore production facilities interconnected by subsea cables are becoming increasingly common, either as new projects or as extensions to existing facilities. Interconnection via a subsea cable introduces a significant shunt capacitance to the source

Modeling and Simulation of Inrush Currents in Harmonic Domain
2021 IEEE Power & Energy Society Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference (ISGT), 2021Modeling and simulation capabilities are critical to the stability analysis and evaluation of power distribution systems, with respect to the emphasis on resiliency, microgrids, and distributed energy resources. In this paper, a computational method in the harmonic domain is proposed for the periodic steady-state analysis of the nonlinear inrush ...

Prediction and Control of Transformer Inrush Currents
IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 2015In this paper, we propose a dynamic model of the electrical transformer suitable for the numerical prediction of the inrush currents due to the arbitrary initial excitation of a transformer after a switch-OFF. In particular, the proposed model can be helpful to control strategies to avoid a transient current overshoot, based on the prediction of the ...

Numerical modelling of transformer inrush currents
2012 IEEE International Energy Conference and Exhibition (ENERGYCON), 2012This paper presents an application of a vector hysteresis model to the prediction of the inrush current due the arbitrary initial excitation of a transformer after a fault. The approach proposed seems promising in order to predict the transient overshoot in current and the optimal time to close the circuit after the fault.

Inrush Current of Superconducting Transformer
IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity, 2013Inrush current in superconducting transformers is a little-known phenomenon. Because of its high values and long time, it may lead to loss of superconductivity in transformer's windings. In the article, we present results of inrush current measurements in two superconducting transformers of the same power but different winding geometries.

Transformer inrush - Harmonics in the current
2018 19th International Scientific Conference on Electric Power Engineering (EPE), 2018When transformer is energized, a transient current up to 10 to 15 times larger than the rated transformer current can flow for several cycles. The differential protections are mainly sensitive during this time, as the inrush current flows just on one site of the transformer and so it creates false differential current.

Inrush currents and their effect on protective relays
2013 66th Annual Conference for Protective Relay Engineers, 2013This paper explains in detail the phenomena of inrush in single-phase transformers during three conditions: transformer energization, external fault clearing and sympathetic inrush. It then focuses on the inrush in three-phase transformers, explaining the phenomena that occurs when there is a delta winding and analyzing the types of transformer ...
