Design and optimisation of rapid real‐time PCR assays for the detection of key Culicoides species

Medical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
Species‐specific real‐time PCR assays were designed and optimised using primer/probe sets targeting C. obsoletus, C. scoticus, C. chiopterus, C. dewulfi, C. pulicaris, C. punctatus and C. impunctatus. Primer specificity and amplification efficiency were validated through in silico specificity analysis and real‐time PCR amplification profiling.

Effect of blood meals and mating on biodemographic characteristics of Aedes albopictus

Physiological Entomology, EarlyView.
Lifespan did not differ between virgin and mated males and females. The number of blood meals (one and two) significantly reduced adult lifespan compared with those with no blood meal. The effect of the second blood meal doubled females' egg production and their reproductive output.
