Predation methods vary widely in their ability to quantify biological control. Estimating predation rates (the number of prey killed per predator per time unit) is crucial. Combining predation rates with predator abundance yields real‐time field estimates of pests consumed.

core
Using a model that translates qualitative prey detection data (presence/absence in predator gut contents) into quantitative predation rates, we estimate species‐specific diets of nine carabid species across three cropping contexts (wheat, sugar beet, and fodder beet) for five prey types.

Insecticidal activity of certain medicinal plants
Fìtoterapìâ, 2004The methanol extracts of eight species of medicinal plants were tested for insecticidal activity in third instar larvae of Egyptian cottonworm (Spodoptera littoralis). All extracts showed a certain degree of larval toxicity. The extracts of Ocimum basilicum, Origanum majorana and Salvia officinalis appeared to be highly toxic.

Insecticidal activity of Bacillus laterosporus
Journal of Invertebrate Pathology, 1985Abstract Strains of Bacillus laterosporus demonstrated pathogenic activity for second-instar larvae of the mosquito, Culex quinquefasciatus, but failed to demonstrate detectable pathogenicity against larvae of the cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni. Of 29 strains of the bacterium screened, 16 displayed pathogenicity for mosquito larvae.
