Evaluation of the Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net Interceptor LN: Laboratory and Experimental Hut Studies against Anopheline and Culicine Mosquitoes in Northeastern Tanzania [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Long lasting insecticidal nets (LN) are a primary method of malaria prevention. Before new types of LN are approved they need to meet quality and efficacy standards set by the WHO Pesticide Evaluation Scheme.

Evaluation of Agave angustifolia as a Sustainable Alternative to Synthetic Pesticides: Phytochemical Composition and Multi‐Trophic Bioactivity

open access: yesFlavour and Fragrance Journal, EarlyView.
The pesticidal potential of Agave angustifolia by assessing its anti‐nematic, antimicrobial, and insecticidal activities, alongside phytochemical profiling. ABSTRACT Plant diseases caused by fungi, bacteria, nematodes, and viruses contribute significantly to annual crop losses and economic hardship. Reliance on chemical pesticides, over a thousand used

Essential oil of Cinnamodendron dinisii Schwanke for the control of Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Plantas Medicinais, 2015
The use of natural compounds is a less aggressive alternative for the control of insects in stored grains, in relation to synthetic chemical agents. Plants with insecticidal properties can be used as a source of these compounds to the direct application ...

Quantifying behavioural interactions between humans and mosquitoes: evaluating the protective efficacy of insecticidal nets against malaria transmission in rural Tanzania. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
BACKGROUND\ud \ud African malaria vectors bite predominantly indoors at night so sleeping under an Insecticide-Treated Net (ITN) can greatly reduce malaria risk.

Effect of Fruit Maturation Stage on the Chemical Composition and Antioxidant and Cytotoxic Activities of Piper nigrum Essential Oil

open access: yesFlavour and Fragrance Journal, EarlyView.
The essential oils of Piper nigrum show marked chemical and biological variation across fruit maturation stages. Ripe fruits yield oils with the strongest antioxidant and cytotoxic activities, demonstrating that maturation directly modulates volatile composition and enhances the bioactive potential of this aromatic species.

Antioxidant and Cytotoxic Properties of Piper spp. Volatile Oils That Inhibit Pathogenic Microorganisms

open access: yesFlavour and Fragrance Journal, EarlyView.
The samples were fungicidal against Candida, with MICs ranging from 62.5 to 250 μg/mL, and fungistatic against Penicillium adametzii, Aspergillus flavus and A. niger, with MICs of 1000 μg/mL. The volatile oils of Piper aduncum and Piper marginatum reduced the viability of MDA‐MB231 cells.
