Leveraging obligate mutualism to resolve the rare species modeling paradox

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, EarlyView.
Species distribution models (SDMs) have emerged as vital tools for devising biodiversity conservation planning, yet modeling rare, data‐deficient species remains a significant challenge. To address this “rare species modelling paradox,” we propose a novel approach which posits that under the condition of significant niche overlap between the obligate ...

Natural Parasitism of Nezara viridula (Linnaeus) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) by Trichopoda pictipennis Bigot (Diptera: Tachinidae) in an Organic Strawberry Field in Germany

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
Natural parasitism of the invasive southern green stinkbug was recorded in an organic strawberry cropping system in southwestern Germany. The tachinid fly Trichopoda pictipennis shows successful establishment and field activity, indicating ongoing range expansion.

Attractiveness of Melon Genotypes to Whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) Mediated by Foliar Morphological and Biochemical Traits

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
This study identifies melon genotypes resistant to Bemisia tabaci by integrating morphological and biochemical leaf traits. Using free‐choice and no‐choice assays, we demonstrate that resistance is primarily mediated by antixenosis. Genotypes CNPH 11‐1071‐43, CNPH 06‐1047‐343, CNPH 13‐1076, and BG MEL 16 significantly reduced whitefly settling and ...

Time‐Course of Attainment and Reversal of Thermal Acclimation in the Invasive Fall Armyworm

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
Heat acclimation was elicited within minutes with stronger responses at higher temperatures while cold acclimation provided no measurable plastic benefit in the invasive fall armyworm. Prolonged high‐temperature acclimation enhanced heat tolerance and delayed reversal of physiological gains while reversal of acclimation was temperature‐dependent ...

Assessing Predator Activity on Clay Models in Response to Common Insecticides in Turfgrass

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
Insecticides exhibited clear but time‐dependent effects on predatory activity, as reflected by impression types and density on clay models in turfgrass. Certain insecticides (bifenthrin, and in some cases acephate + imidacloprid, imidacloprid, chlorantraniliprole, and tetraniliprole) reduced total impressions shortly after application and again later ...
