The organophosphate insecticides have become widely used in agriculture and in home gardening. There has been an increase in accidental and intentional poisoning. Almost all these compounds are potent cholinesterase inhibitors, and signs of poisoning are attributable to the accumulation of acetylcholine.

Intensive care management of organophosphate insecticide poisoning [PDF]
Organophosphate (OP) insecticides inhibit both cholinesterase and pseudo-cholinesterase activities. The inhibition of acetylcholinesterase causes accumulation of acetylcholine at synapses, and overstimulation of neurotransmission occurs as a result of this accumulation. The mortality rate of OP poisoning is high.
