Inspiratory effort and occlusion pressure in triggered mechanical ventilation

Intensive Care Medicine, 1988
We have studied eleven patients ventilated in the assisted mode during recovery from acute respiratory failure. We have measured the effort required to trigger the pressure demand valve for 3 different ventilators, and have measured the occlusion pressure as an index of neuromuscular inspiratory drive.

Techniques to monitor respiratory drive and inspiratory effort

Current Opinion in Critical Care, 2020
Purpose of review There is increased awareness that derangements of respiratory drive and inspiratory effort are frequent and can result in lung and diaphragm injury together with dyspnea and sleep disturbances.

Pulse Transit Time as a Measure of Inspiratory Effort in Children

Chest, 2003
The current criterion standard for measuring inspiratory effort, esophageal manometry, is an invasive procedure that young patients find intolerable. Inspiratory effort can also be assessed noninvasively by measuring the pulse transit time (PTT). PTT is the time the pulse wave (PW) takes to travel between two arterial sites (normally heart to finger ...

"Effects of fenoterol on inspiratory effort sensation and fatigue during inspiratory threshold loading"

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1996
We studied the effects of a single dose of fenoterol on the relationship between inspiratory effort sensation (IES) and inspiratory muscle fatigue induced by inspiratory threshold loading in healthy subjects. The magnitude of the threshold was 60% of maximal static inspiratory mouth pressure (PI,mmax) at functional residual capacity, and the duty ...

The impact of inspiratory effort on inspiratory flow through Turbuhaler in asthmatic patients

European Respiratory Journal, 1997
To investigate the impact of the inhalation effort on the peak inspiratory flow through Turbuhaler, 100 asthmatics having a wide range of asthma severity (baseline forced expiratory volume in one second 28-127% of predicted normal) were studied.

Esophageal and transdiaphragmatic pressure swings as indices of inspiratory effort

Respiratory Physiology & Neurobiology, 2021
To describe the correlation between the inspiratory esophageal and transdiaphragmatic pressure swings (ΔPes and ΔPdi), easily measured indices of inspiratory effort, with the gold-standard, the transdiaphragmatic pressure time product (PTPPdi/min), and assess the accuracy of swing pressures in predicting very high or low effort.Retrospective analysis ...
