Bio-inspired looming direction detection method
2012 13th International Workshop on Cellular Nanoscale Networks and their Applications, 2012The retina inspired approaching object detection algorithm — based on the recently identified Pvlab-5 ganglion cell — is a computationally easy segmentation free method. The original method can detect only the dark looming objects against bright background.

Understanding fly-ear inspired directional microphones
SPIE Proceedings, 2009In this article, the equivalent two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) model for the hypersensitive ear of fly Ormia ocharacea is revisited. It is found that in addition to the mechanical coupling between the ears, the key to the remarkable directional hearing ability of the fly is the proper contributions of the rocking mode and bending mode of the ear ...

Fly-Inspired MEMS Directional Acoustic Sensor for Sound Source Direction
2019 20th International Conference on Solid-State Sensors, Actuators and Microsystems & Eurosensors XXXIII (TRANSDUCERS & EUROSENSORS XXXIII), 2019The total internal noise of conventional sound source detection (SSD) comprising of multiple sensors is relatively high, which is their fundamental drawback. This paper reports a novel approach of SSD based on the cosine dependency of each wing of piezoelectric MEMS directional microphone rather than relying on time difference of arrival (TDOA), which ...

Bio-Inspired Bi-Directional Optimization Algorithms
2017In this chapter, based on different biological mechanisms, some bi-directional optimization methods are proposed. Firstly, a bi-directional optimization method based on an immune-enhanced neural network is introduced. Then, a hybrid approach of genetic algorithm (GA) and improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) is proposed to construct the radial ...

Metamaterial-inspired high directive half-loop antenna
2014 International Conference on Multimedia Computing and Systems (ICMCS), 2014—This paper presents a high directive antenna consisting of a half-loop antenna coupled with C resonators cells. With a global size of 10cm x 10cm x 11.4cm the directivity of the antenna is 7.3dB at 920.4MHz. If the orientation of the C resonators is changed, the resulting antenna still has directivity of 7.4dB but with a little increase of the ...

Bio-inspired consensus under suggested convergence direction
2017 American Control Conference (ACC), 2017A new class of cooperative bat-inspired consensus protocols are proposed and analyzed in this paper. Motivated by the bat searching algorithm in swarm intelligence, the proposed bat consensus protocols have the outstanding feature of achieving convergent agreement of bat states toward a suggested direction, a feature also which happens to be solving a ...

Development of novel biologically inspired directional microphones
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2006The development of novel directional microphones for hearing aids is described. The mechanisms underlying the design of these unusual microphones were inspired by our earlier study of the ears of the parasitoid fly Ormia ochracea [Miles, et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 98, 3059–3070 (1995)].

Work Motivation: Identifying Use-Inspired Research Directions
Industrial and Organizational Psychology, 2009The study of work motivation progresses through the inspiration that comes from creating new alignments between scientific understanding and considerations of practical use (cf. D. E. Stokes, 1997). Using the 3 C’s framework for work motivation (Kanfer, Chen, & Pritchard, 2008a, b), I coordinate 5 practical concerns related to work motivation with ...

A Measure of Directional Convexity Inspired by Binary Tomography
Fundamenta Informaticae, 2015Abstract Inspired by binary tomography, we present a measure of directional convexity of binary images combining various properties of the configuration of 0s and 1s in the binary image. The measure can be supported by proper theory, is easy to compute, and as shown in our experiments, behaves intuitively.
