This review discusses numerical and structural chromosomal instability in cancer cells and its possible etiologies, highlighting the recent literature.Defects in chromosomal segregation, telomere stability, and the DNA damage response play significant roles in chromosomal instability in cancer. The pace of discoveries into the biologic basis of ...

Patellar instability is a common injury that can result in significant limitations of activity and long-term arthritis. There is a high risk of recurrence in patients and operative management is often indicated. Advances in the understanding of patellofemoral anatomy, such as knowledge about the medial patellofemoral ligament, tibial tubercle-trochlear

The Physics of Fluids, 1964
A discussion is given concerning the effects of viscosity and large disturbance amplitude on the instability occurring at a slip interface between two parts of an incompressible fluid. In particular it is shown how an analysis by Carrier can be applied to explain the train of small vortices generated at a shearing edge, and comparisons with ...

» Certain anatomic factors, such as patella alta, increased tibial tubercle-trochlear groove distance, rotational deformity, and trochlear dysplasia, are associated with an increased risk of recurrent patellar instability.» The presence of a preoperative J-sign is predictive of recurrent instability after operative ...

Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Review, 2010
Hip instability is becoming a more commonly recognized source of pain and disability in patients. Traumatic causes of hip instability are often clear. Appropriate treatment includes immediate reduction, early surgery for acetabular rim fractures greater than 25% or incarcerated fragments in the joint, and close follow-up to monitor for avascular ...

Unlike aneuploidy, considered to be the cardinal feature of malignant tumors ever since the chromosomal analysis of neoplastic cells became technically feasible, a second pathway toward malignancy has emerged over the past decade that is not characterized by gross aneuploidy but, instead, by inactivation of the DNA mismatch repair system, leading to a ...

The various definitions of instability are reviewed and preference is given to the definition of instability as a loss of stiffness. This definition fits with current laboratory observations. Roentgenographic changes, particularly those associated with degeneration, have no relationship to instability.

A uniform train of periodic waves may be unstable to large scale variations so that some incoherence can develop. The analysis is presented for the case of gravity waves, and for a class of interaction problems typical of many physical systems.
