Instability of an Elastic Strip Hanging in an Airstream

open access: yesJournal of Applied Mechanics, 1975
The stability of a long, thin elastic strip hanging vertically in a downward flowing airstream was considered. Experimentally it was observed that the strip remained essentially motionless or at most developed a small amplitude bounded oscillation as the air speed was increased until a critical speed was attained beyond which violent oscillations of ...

Crack instabilities of a heated glass strip

Physical Review E, 1995
Recently, Yuse and Sano [Nature (London) 362, 329 (1993)] have observed that a crack traveling in a glass strip submitted to a nonuniform thermal diffusion field undergoes numerous instabilities. We study two cases of quasistatic crack propagation. The crack extension condition in straight propagation is determined.

Statistics of the Instability Strip of Cephei Stars

Chinese Journal of Astronomy and Astrophysics, 2003
We present a study of the beta Cephei instability strip based on a sample of 49 stars of this type. After deriving their effective temperatures and luminosities from their observed (B - V), (U - B) colors and parallaxes we find their positions in the HR diagram to be mostly confined to the main sequence, and their masses to lie between 7M(circle dot ...

Non-Cepheids in the Instability Strip

International Astronomical Union Colloquium, 1985
AbstractThe question of whether non-Cepheids populate the cepheid instability strip has been the subject of much recent interest. Several investigators (see especially Fernie and Hube 1971 and Fernie 1976) have concluded that indeed there are an appreciable number of objects not presently recognized as Cepheids within the strip, though both the size ...

Convection and the ZZ Ceti Instability Strip

1997
Theoretical predictions of the ZZ Ceti instability strip (Bradley and Winget 1994; Brassard et al. as cited in Bergeron et al. 1995 (B95)) have found a very strong dependence of the blue edge on the assumed efficiency of the convective energy transport.
