Soils, scale, or elites? Biological innovation in Uruguayan cattle farming, 1880–1913

open access: yesThe Economic History Review, Volume 76, Issue 2, Page 498-524, May 2023., 2023
Abstract This article examines the economics of innovation in livestock rearing during the first globalisation in Uruguay, the country with the most cattle per person in the world, both then and now. Using a new historical dataset of Uruguayan agriculture, the first one at a sub‐provincial level, I exploit regional differences in the adoption of cattle

Tropical Land-Use Change Disrupts Zeta-Diversity Across Taxa. [PDF]

open access: yesGlob Chang Biol
We studied birds, dung beetles, and orchids across natural and human‐transformed habitats in the Colombian Andes to understand how land‐use change affects biodiversity. We found that deforestation simplifies ecological communities and reduces both rare and widespread species, especially orchids.

Does the loss of diadromy imply the loss of salinity tolerance? A gene expression study with replicate nondiadromous populations of Galaxias maculatus

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 32, Issue 9, Page 2219-2233, May 2023., 2023
Abstract The recurrent colonization of freshwater habitats and subsequent loss of diadromy is a major ecological transition that has been reported in many ancestrally diadromous fishes. Such residency is often accompanied by a loss of tolerance to seawater.

Bird species occupancy trends in Southeast Mexico over 1900–2020: Accounting for sighting record absences

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 92, Issue 3, Page 606-618, March 2023., 2023
This article accounts for species absences before occupancy analyses, addressing a long‐standing concern of whether absence is true or due to low sampling effort. The authors affiliate long‐term bird species trends with functional traits in a lowland tropical rainforest landscape in southeast Mexico to help guide land management and conservation ...

Experimental admixture among geographically disjunct populations of an invasive plant yields a global mosaic of reproductive incompatibility and heterosis

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 109, Issue 5, Page 2152-2162, May 2021., 2021
Biogeographic patterns of variation in reproductive success in an invasive weed with allopatric distribution. Abstract Invasive species have the ability to rapidly adapt in the new regions where they are introduced. Classic evolutionary theory predicts that the accumulation of genetic differences over time in allopatric isolation may lead to ...
