Advanced detectors and instruments for small satellites

Acta Astronautica, 1996
Abstract This paper presents some approaches to the development of advanced detectors and to miniaturized instrument design which are pursued in the Institute of Space Sensor Technology of DLR (the German Aerospace Research Establishment). The instrument design approach is demonstrated for a low-weight (3 kg) dual camera system with narrow-angle in ...

The MUSE instrument detector system

SPIE Proceedings, 2012
The MUSE (Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer) instrument (see Bacon et al., this conference) for ESO's Very Large Telescope VLT employs 24 integral field units (spectrographs). Each of these is equipped with its own cryogenically cooled CCD head. The heads are individually cooled by continuous flow cryostats. The detectors used are deep depletion e2v

Neutron detectors for reactor instrumentation

Proceedings of the IEE - Part II: Power Engineering, 1953
The paper discusses the principles involved in the detection of thermal neutrons and describes three types of detector used in the operation of natural-uranium graphite-moderated reactors, namely flux-scanning detectors, installed flux monitors and detectors used in association with automatic power-control plants.

The MICE detector instrumentation

Nuclear Physics B - Proceedings Supplements, 2006
The instrumentation of the MICE experiment at RAL, to be used to demonstrate muon cooling, is presented. It must provide good tracking and PID capabilities, to give high precision emittance measurements, in a harsh environment with high incoming particle rates, not-uniform fringe magnetic fields and high backgrounds.

INSTRUMENTATION OF THE FAST DETECTOR

Astroparticle, Particle and Space Physics, Detectors and Medical Physics Applications, 2008
The Fiber Active Scintillator Target (FAST) is an imaging particle detector intended for high precision muon lifetime measurement. This measurement will lead to a determination of the Fermi coupling constant (C,) with an uncertainty of Ippm, one order of magnitude better than the current world average.

Instrumentation for multi-detector arrays

Pramana, 2001
The new generation of detector arrays require complex instrumentation and data acquisition system to ensure increased reliability of operation, high degree of integration, software control and faster data handling capability. The main features of some of the existing multi-detector arrays like MSU 4π array, Gammasphere and Eurogam are summarized.

The antares neutrino detector instrumentation

Journal of Instrumentation, 2012
ANTARES is actually the fully operational and the largest neutrino telescope in the Northern hemisphere. Located in the Mediterranean Sea, it consists of a 3D array of 885 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) arranged in 12 detection lines (25 storeys each), able to detect the Cherenkov light induced by upgoing relativistic muons produced in the interaction of

High-speed SALT instrument CCD detectors

SPIE Proceedings, 2004
SALT, the Southern African Large Telescope, is a 10-m class telescope presently under construction and designed along the lines of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET) at McDonald Observatory in West Texas. The two first light instruments are a simple science imager, SALTICAM, which also doubles as the telescope acquisition camera, and a low resolution ...
