Optical parameters relevant for High Angular Resolution at Paranal from GSM instrument and surface layer contribution [PDF]
Main atmospheric parameters characterizing the turbulence were measured at the Paranal ESO Observatory (Chile) with the Generalized Seeing Monitor (GSM) during 19 nights in November{December 1998. The median seeing for this period was 0:88 00 , a little worse than average, the spatial coherence outer scale of the wavefrontL0 =2 2:0 m and the median ...

A Multi-instrument and Multi-wavelength High Angular Resolution Study of MWC 614: Quantum Heated Particles Inside the Disk Cavity* [PDF]
Abstract High angular resolution observations of young stellar objects are required to study the inner astronomical units of protoplanetary disks in which the majority of planets form. As they evolve, gaps open up in the inner disk regions and the disks are fully dispersed within ∼10 Myr. MWC 614 is a pretransitional object with a ∼10 au

Prospects for High Angular Resolution Instrumentation at Millimeter and Submillimeter Wavelengths [PDF]
Millimeter- and submillimeter wavelength interferometry is a powerful technique allowing imaging of dust and molecules in a multitude of astronomical environments. With the arrival of the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), such studies will be possible with unprecedented sensitivity and a spatial resolution similar to the diffraction limit of large

Stigmatic Spectroscopic Instruments for the Wavelength Range 30-300 Å With High Angular and Spectral Resolution Using Multi-layer Mirrors [PDF]
A concept of stigmatic spectroscopic instruments for the range λ ~30-300 Å is presented, A parallel beam is dispersed by means of a plane diffraction grating at grazing incidence, whereas focusing of the XUV radiation is performed by a concave multilayer mirror at normal incidence.

ESO's Very Large Telescope Interferometer has a history of record-breaking discoveries in astrophysics and significant advances in instrumentation. The next leap forward is its new visitor instrument, called Asgard. It comprises four natively collaborating instruments: HEIMDALLR, an instrument performing both fringe tracking and stellar interferometry ...

High Angular Resolution and Extrasolar Planets: Beyond Basic Instrumental Performances
I review the characteristics of planetary systems accessible to imaging. I show that, beyond the basic angular resolution and dynamics performances of an optical ``architecture'', other performances such as photometric precision, spectral range or timing are necessary to access some physical characteristics of the planets.
