Integral Abutment Bridges: The European Way

open access: yesPractice Periodical on Structural Design and Construction, 2010
Integral abutment bridges are becoming more popular in Europe, but the traditions differ from country to country. This leads to different technical solutions for the same problem in each country. A European survey was conducted in early 2007 to illustrate the design criteria used by each different country for integral abutment bridges.

Analysis of Curved Integral Abutment Bridges

open access: yes, 2010
Deformation of bridges that are induced by thermal loads can be accommodated by expansion joints and bearings. Integral Abutment Bridges have gained acceptance as a way to mitigate potential damage from thermal movements, eliminating the poor performance and maintenance costs associated with expansion joints and bearings.

Semi Static Loads in an Integral Abutment Bridge

open access: yesIABSE Reports, 2016
<p>In order to solve the durability problem of expansion joints and bearings, Integral Abutment Bridges (IAB) have become more and more popular. Soil Structure Interaction (SSI) is a factor that conditions the possibility of the construction of a new IAB, or the retrofitting of an existing from a simply supported bridge into an IAB. Under imposed

Seismic modeling of integral abutment bridges in Illinois

Engineering Structures, 2018
Abstract Integral abutment bridges (IABs) are a common bridge type used in modern design and construction to prevent damage at the abutment seat from water, dirt, or deicing chemicals penetrating through a compromised expansion joint. Elimination of expansion joints in IABs leads to complex soil-structure-interaction limit states involving the IAB ...

Rigidity of abutments in integral abutment bridges

Structure and Infrastructure Engineering, 2011
In this article, we present the results from a numerical and an experimental analysis of the Scotch Road integral abutment bridge located in Trenton, New Jersey. A three-dimensional, non-linear finite element (FE) model of the bridge has been developed to study the effect of thermal loading on pile–soil interaction.
