Astrophotonics: the rise of integrated photonics in astronomy [PDF]

open access: yesOptics & Photonics News (2019), 2019
Astronomers have come to recognize the benefits of photonics, often in combination with optical systems, in solving longstanding experimental problems in Earth-based astronomy. Here, we explore some of the recent advances made possible by integrated photonics. We also look to the future with a view to entirely new kinds of astronomy, particularly in an

Multifunctional integrated photonic switches [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics, 2005
Traditional optical-electronic-optical (o-e-o) conversion in today's optical networks requires cascading separately packaged electronic and optoelectronic chips and propagating high-speed electrical signals through and between these discrete modules. This increases the packaging and component costs, size, power consumption, and heat dissipation.

High Repetition Rate Laser‐Induced Printing of Bioink with Picosecond Pulse Durations: Optimization of the Printing Process

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study explores the use of laser‐induced forward transfer in the picosecond regime to create in vitro biomodels. Focusing on hydrodynamics and rheology, it investigates jet dynamics through time‐resolved imaging, optimizing laser fluence, biological ink viscosity, and printing distance to precisely control the volume and location of bioink ...

Reviving holographic photonic integration [PDF]

open access: yesReviving holographic photonic integration, Nature Photonic 18, 402 (2024)
Photonic integration of thick holograms in waveguiding structures could be considered the chimera of photonics; multi-faceted and hard to tame. It is the fundamental, and hence indispensable, concept behind compact and monolithically integrated linear optical transformation1.

ALD‐Assisted VO2 for Memristor Application

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates a strategy for depositing VOx using thermal atomic layer deposition (ALD) followed by thermal annealing to synthesize VO2. The thin film and core/shell wire memristors exhibit excellent switching performance and are highly sensitive to ambient temperature.

Non-resonant recirculating light phase modulator

open access: yesAPL Photonics, 2022
High efficiency and a compact footprint are desired properties for electro-optic modulators. In this paper, we propose, theoretically investigate, and experimentally demonstrate a recirculating phase modulator, which increases the modulation efficiency ...

An Examination of Aerosol Jet‐Printed Surface Roughness and its Impact on the Performance of High‐Frequency Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study explores aerosol jet‐printed (AJP) surface roughness, its effects on the performance of microwave electronics, and its process contributors. First, an electromagnetic model is vetted for AJP's unique roughness signature. Simulations are built which show process‐induced roughness is as significant as conductor resistivity in driving microwave
