Integrated Transcriptomic and Physiological Analyses Reveal Disruption of Digestive Homeostasis Induced by Protease Inhibitors in Anticarsia gemmatalis Caterpillars

open access: yesArchives of Insect Biochemistry and Physiology, Volume 123, Issue 2, October 2026.
The peptides SKTI and GORE‐2 triggered distinct midgut responses in Anticarsia gemmatalis (Lepidoptera: Erebidae). SKTI promoted compensatory digestive and antioxidant responses, whereas GORE‐2 caused broader digestive protease repression, weaker antioxidant activation, and greater epithelial damage.

How wildlife respond to tropical cyclones: short‐term tactics and long‐term impacts

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 5, Page 2081-2102, October 2026.
ABSTRACT From butterflies to lizards and from sharks to seabirds, wildlife exhibit tactics to survive the impacts of tropical cyclones, also known as hurricanes, cyclones, or typhoons depending on where they occur. Some species seek refuge during the storm by moving, some remain in place and ride it out, and others move longer distances, avoiding the ...

Nocturnal Lepidoptera Larvae in Mega‐Project: Habitat and Environmental Factors Over Construction Effects

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 10, October 2026.
This study assessed the effects of construction‐related factors, including ALAN, on nocturnal Lepidoptera larvae in mega‐project areas. The results suggest that local environmental conditions play a greater role than ALAN intensity in shaping larval assemblages.

Vengeful Vines: Cell Death and Neoplasm Formation in Aristolochia (Aristolochiaceae, Piperales) in Response to Oviposition of Troidini (Papilionidae, Lepidoptera) Butterflies

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 10, October 2026.
This study investigates the oviposition ecology of the iconic Troidini butterflies on their host plants of the genus Aristolochia in Sabah, where we made the first observation of HR‐like cell death and neoplasm formation in response to oviposition of Troidini, signifying the first such record in the entire Magnoliid clade (> 10,000 spp.).

Biomass allocation, compensatory growth and internal C/N balance of Lolium perenne in response to defoliation and light treatments

open access: yes, 2016
Light environments can have a considerable influence on how plants respond to defoliation through influencing the biomass allocation patterns and internal C/N ratio.

Soybean induced resistance to Spodoptera eridania herbivory

open access: yesPest Management Science, Volume 82, Issue 10, Page 9931-9943, October 2026.
SOD, CAT, APX, PPO, KTI, and MDA levels were higher in the resistant soybean. S. eridania herbivory increased H2O2 and MDA, but decreased SOD and PPO levels. S. eridania herbivory increased KTI activity only in the resistant variety. Isoquercitrin and daidzin were exclusive to resistant and susceptible soybeans.

Multifactorial diagnosis of drought‐induced decline in Mediterranean conifer forests

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 10, October 2026.
A multi‐proxy approach integrating radial growth, leaf morphology, stable isotopes, elemental composition and soil properties revealed interacting mechanisms underlying drought‐induced dieback in Mediterranean pine populations. Declining trees showed stronger drought impacts on growth, altered stomatal regulation, nutrient imbalances and accelerated ...

Mycorrhizal responses to defoliation of woody hosts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Mycorrhizal fungi are important contributors to the functioning of boreal forests, since they act in the bilateral carbon and nutrient transport between above- and belowground parts of the ecosystem.

Shrub canopies preserve climatic niche disparity among recruit species in Mediterranean drylands

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 10, October 2026.
Shrub canopies create microrefuges for recruit diversity. Across 10 Mediterranean shrublands, recruits beneath canopies encompassed a wider range of climatic niches and greater phylogenetic diversity than those in open ground. By hosting diverse climatic strategies, plant canopies may help sustain biodiversity under climate change, offering a ...

Preventing Invasive Non‐Native Species: A Horizon Scanning for the Canary Islands

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 32, Issue 10, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim Oceanic islands host exceptional biodiversity and endemism but are highly vulnerable to biological invasions. We aimed to identify non‐native species with high potential to invade the Canary Islands within the next decade and to prioritise them based on their environmental and socioeconomic risks.
