Binary classification of frozen input spike patterns by a somatic spike / no-spike code for the reward-modulated somato-dendritic synaptic plasticity (R-sdSP).

open access: yes, 2016
A: Four input patterns, the two patterns in the top row should elicit no somatic spikes; the patterns in the bottom row should. B: R-sdSP perfectly learns the classification after roughly 1000 presentations (blue solid).

Localized Temperature Monitoring in Mouse Brain during Light Delivery via a Non‐Planar Tapered Fiber‐Integrated µRTD Sensor

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We report a multifunctional tapered optical fiber integrating a conformal micro‐resistance temperature detector (µRTD) for local, real‐time thermometry during optical stimulation. The platform combines light‐delivery and temperature sensing within a minimally invasive footprint, enabling detection of sub‐degree cortical heating under representative ...

A Duplex Theory of Spike Coding in the Early Stages of the Auditory System

open access: yes, 2007
We propose a duplex theory of spike coding in the early stages of the auditory system based on the intensity and noise levels of the acoustic stimuli. According to this concept, at low intensity levels, where auditory nerve firings cannot generate a high

Self‐Powered Flexible Triboelectric‐Gated Ion‐Gel Transistor for Neuromorphic Tactile Sensing and Human Activity Recognition

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A fully flexible ion‐gel‐gated graphene‐channel transistor driven by a triboelectric nanogenerator enables self‐powered tactile sensing and synaptic learning. Mimicking spike‐rate‐dependent plasticity, the device exhibits frequency‐selective potentiation and depression, supporting rate‐coded neuromorphic computation even under flex.

Obtaining attosecond x-ray pulses using a self-amplified spontaneous emission free electron laser

open access: yesPhysical Review Special Topics. Accelerators and Beams, 2005
We describe a technique for the generation of a solitary attosecond x-ray pulse in a free-electron laser (FEL), via a process of self-amplified spontaneous emission.

Viral Infection‐Inspired Autonomous Detection of Fusion‐Competent Viruses for Screening and Environmental Surveillance

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by viral entry mechanisms, the FUSION assay enables autonomous detection of respiratory viruses via membrane fusion–triggered CRISPR‐Cas13a activation. VEACON selectively fuses with fusion‐competent viruses, triggering fluorescence within confined vesicles.
