SkyBridge: Fast and Secure Inter-Process Communication for Microkernels

European Conference on Computer Systems, 2019
Microkernels have been extensively studied over decades. However, IPC (Inter-Process Communication) is still a major factor of runtime overhead, where fine-grained isolation usually leads to excessive IPCs.

Inter-process Communication

1985
Whenever there are many distinct, inter-dependent processes running in a computer system, there is a requirement for a means of communication between them. Inter-process communication allows complex tasks to be decomposed into a number of separate functional elements and unrelated processes to be made aware of each other&;#x2019;s resource requirements

Cros-Rt: Cross-Layer Priority Scheduling for Predictable Inter-Process Communication in Ros 2

IEEE Real Time Technology and Applications Symposium
The Robot Operating System 2 (ROS 2) is a popular middleware for distributed robotic applications. However, achieving real-time guarantees in ROS 2 is challenging due to unpredictable delays and priority inversions. We reveal that these issues arise from

Using BINS for inter-process communication

ACM SIGPLAN Notices, 1985
A bin is essentially a message drop, used to implement inter-process communications in the FRANK programming language. The use of bins provides three distinct advantages over traditional message passing systems.1) relative anonymity,2) multiple servers,3) enhanced compile time checking.

CommMgr: A new inter-process communication management software

Computer Standards & Interfaces, 2006
This paper discusses local and remote IPC (inter-process communication) and Winsock I/O models on Windows platform. A more efficient and secure inter-process communication model based on Winsock I/O models is presented. In this paper, an IPC management software named CommMgr is developed according to this communication model.

DTrace the Solaris Doors in Inter-process Communication

2008 International Symposium on Computer Science and Computational Technology, 2008
By using DTrace tools in Solaris operating system. The behavior of doors IPC which is developed by Sun Microsystems is traced. Discussing with various kinds of Solaris IPCs, this paper mainly tests the Solaris doors in IPC programming. The test results illustrates that the door IPC in OS is thread safety by using core mutual exclusive in system.

PastSet-an efficient high level inter process communication mechanism

Proceedings. 1998 International Conference on Parallel Processing (Cat. No.98EX205), 2002
A new high level IPC mechanism, PastSet, is presented. PastSet supports partial causal ordered logging of synchronization and communication events. Communicated data are represented as tuples and stored in a common repository accessible by all processes. In the repository, tuples of the same template are causally ordered.

DIPC-a monitor for distributed inter-process communication

Proceedings Euromicro Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Processing, 2002
DIPC, a monitor for distributed inter-process communication (distributed IPC), is described. In a distributed environment, it transparently provides all important IPC constructs for communication and synchronization between processes, which are normally given by a modern conventional (uniprocessor) operating system environment. In addition, new classes

Hardware support for inter-process communication and processor sharing

Proceedings of the 3rd annual symposium on Computer architecture - ISCA '76, 1976
The abstraction of a computer system as a set of asynchronous communicating processes is an important system concept. This paper indicates how the concept could be supported at a low hardware level. A new inter-process communication mechanism called a mailbox is introduced. Examples of its use as a programming tool are given.

A Design to Adapt Microkernel Inter-process Communication Mechanism

Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Intelligent Information Processing, 2018
In order to improve the efficiency of inter-process communication among microkernel operating systems, this paper proposes an inter-process communication mechanism for microkernels. The mechanism runs IPC (Inter-Process Communication) as a set of library functions.
