Inter-track interference studies using MFM image reconstruction
IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 1997The Magnetic Force Microscopy (MFM) image reconstruction technique has overcome difficulties in interpreting MFM images of data tracks written on longitudinal recording media. In this work, MFM image reconstruction is used to study the vector magnetization components of closely spaced tracks.

Inter-track interference free coding and equalization
Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 1997Abstract A new coding technique using improved inter-track orthogonal coding (ITOC) was proposed for high track density and/or multi-track recording. The coding has, in principle, the ability to eliminate cross talk from adjacent tracks. The new coding was compared with direct NRZI by a computer simulation.

Inter-Track Interference Mitigation for Bit-Patterned Magnetic Recording
IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 2010In bit-patterned magnetic recording (BPMR), inter-track interference (ITI) becomes a major impairment due to the small track pitch. One way to mitigate the ITI is to equalize the read channel to a two dimensional (2D) partial-response (PR) target. However, we find that the channel detection on the center track cannot take advantage of the 2D target ...

Constructive inter-track interference (CITI) codes for perpendicular magnetic recording
Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 2005This paper presents new modulation codes to reduce the effect of adjacent track interference (ATI) also known as inter-track interference (ITI). New modulation codes, that is constructive inter-track interference (CITI) codes and partial response (PR) targets, are investigated using computer simulation in perpendicular magnetic channel. CITI codes have

Exploitation of inter-track interference in a shingled replay system
Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 2009The expected increase in areal density in hard drives will require very narrow tracks. Tracks which are of a similar width to the read head and which are not separated by guardbands normally suffer from large inter-track interference (ITI) or crosstalk. Here, we show that it is possible to read from tracks which are not separated by guardbands and that

Generalized Interlaced Magnetic Recording With Flexible Inter-Track Interference Cancellation
IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 2018In this paper, interlaced magnetic recording (IMR) is generalized with a flexible inter-track interference cancellation (F-ITIC) scheme to enhance the overall areal density capability (ADC) by balancing and mitigating the mutual ITI between neighboring tracks.

Flexible Inter-Track Interference Cancellation for Generalized Interlaced Magnetic Recording
2018 IEEE International Magnetics Conference (INTERMAG), 2018Interlaced magnetic recording (IMR) shows potential to achieve higher areal density capability (ADC) than conventional magnetic recording by recording tracks in an interlaced manner [1]. Top and bottom tracks can be recorded in different frequencies such that the bit error rate (BER) performance can be balanced, providing extra track or linear density ...

Track squeeze using adaptive intertrack interference equalization
IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 2002Summary form only given. A new maximum likelihood sequence detection (MLSD) technique to reduce the effects of inter-track interference (ITI) is presented in this paper. As track densities increase, ITI and off-track interference (OTI) occur, and have detrimental effects on the performance of current MLSD decoders. A solution is to perform MLSD with an

A Parametric Study of Inter-Track Interference in Bit Patterned Media Recording
IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 2010We present a parametric study of inter-track interference (ITI) in the context of bit patterned media (BPM) recording channels. Bit error rate (BER) simulation results for optimal bit detection at moderate-to-high signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) show that, in a certain range of ITI levels, increased ITI does not necessarily degrade performance.

Two-dimensional coding for a multi-track recording system to combat inter-track interference
IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 1998Increasing track density, through a narrowing of the read head, leads to a reduced signal-to-noise ratio and increased inter-track-interference (ITI). Two-dimensional codes for multi-track recording systems have demonstrated increased capacity over conventional single track run length limited (RLL) codes. This paper describes a two-dimensional code for
