Bar Formation by Galaxy-Galaxy Interactions

2004
Bar formation process in interacting galaxies is reviewed on the basis of recent numerical simulations. I focus especially on the possible kinematical difference between tidally-induced bars and spontaneous bars: the former spans a wider range in the rotation rate, depending upon the parameters of the interaction as well as the internal structure of ...

The Effects of Galaxy — Galaxy Interactions on Nuclear Activity [PDF]

open access: possible, 1986
The notion that galaxy — galaxy interactions do affect the properties of galaxy nuclei is not new. The earliest indications come from surveys of the radio continuum emission from spiral galaxies. Sulentic (1976) and Stocke (1978) demonstrated that galaxies in close pairs show an excess of radio emission.

The Hydrodynamical Interaction of Galaxies

1991
We present 3D hydrodynamical calculations on interacting/merging galaxies. We find that nearly head-on collisions of galaxies lead to new galaxy formation.

Galaxy Interactions and Transformations

2010
So far we have treated galaxies as isolated, non-interacting systems. However, in the hierarchical scenario of structure formation, galaxies and their associated dark matter halos undergo frequent interactions with each other. As we have seen in §7.3.6, a large fraction of dark matter halos are expected to be dynamically young (i.e. to have experienced

Starbursts in interacting galaxies

2008
We first review the evidence for IR activity in interacting and merging galaxies, based on 10 and 20 µm observations. We then investigate the ‘starbursts vs. monsters’ explanations for the energy source powering the IR activity in these galaxies. Using available IR photometry, and IR, optical, and ultraviolet spectroscopy, we show that, in general, a ...
