Enhancing interactional synchrony with an ambient display
Proceedings of the SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, 2011Nonverbal communication is an essential part of face-to-face social interaction, conveying information about emotion and interpersonal relationships. The rigorous sensing capabilities of pervasive technologies and the subtle nature of ambient technologies make them ideal to support the production of nonverbal communication in social interactions.

Synchrony in mother‐infant interaction: A possible neurophysiological base
British Journal of Medical Psychology, 1983The extent to which mothers and their infants can synchronize their activity levels and cycles of engagement and disengagement has been seen as fundamental to healthy affective development in the infant. Ten mothers and their infants were studied to consider the possibility of a neurophysiological base to synchronization potential.

The validity of a rating paradigm used to measure relative degrees of movement coordination occurring within social interaction (i.e., interactional synchrony) was examined. Untrained judges viewed video clips from 60 dyads, each recorded in two interaction contexts. Two types of video displays were generated.

Coverbal Synchrony in Human-Machine Interaction
2013Embodied conversational agents (ECA) and speech-based humanmachine interfaces can together represent more advanced and more natural humanmachine interaction. Fusion of both topics is a challenging agenda in research and production spheres. The important goal of humanmachine interfaces is to provide content or functionality in the form of a dialog ...
