The adhesive properties of certain types of biopolymer can be used to increase the residence time of orally or nasally administered drugs. A fuller understanding of the molecular processes underpinning such ‘mucoadhesive’ phenomena will help in the optimal design of delivery systems.

Abstract In this chapter we begin to describe the effects of electron-electron interactions in conjugated polymers. We first discuss broken symmetry ground states before focussing on the character and excitation energies of some of the important lowlying states.
