Simulated Tree‐Grass Competition in Drylands Is Modulated by CO2 Fertilization

open access: yesEarth's Future
Interannual variability in climatic drivers can have a strong impact on dryland ecosystem functioning globally. While interannual variations in dryland ecosystem processes are mainly driven by rainfall, other global change drivers such as CO2 ...

Southern Portugal hydroclimate of the last millennium from near‐annually resolved speleothem records

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Hydroclimate in Portugal is influenced by the North Atlantic subtropical high‐pressure system (the Azores High) and by internal climate modes, most prominently the North Atlantic Oscillation, which may shift in position and/or intensity due to anthropogenic climate change.

Viability analysis and the importance of fine‐scale variables influencing roadkills of a toad population

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
Fine‐scale population variables better explain roadkill patterns in natterjack toads (Epidalea calamita) than habitat proxies, with mortality driven mainly by local abundance, reduced by roadside embankments, and decreasing as the season advanced. Despite high roadkills, population viability analyses indicate no immediate extinction risk under current ...

Eddy kinetic energy variability of the Kuroshio Extension and its upstream-downstream connectivity

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
The Kuroshio Extension (KE) system in the western North Pacific includes energetic meanders of the Kuroshio jet that are full of mesoscale eddies.

Cutting through the noise: What can habitat selection modeling teach us about caribou‐fire space use dynamics?

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
We synthesize the current knowledge regarding caribou habitat selection in relation to wildfires. Caribou responses to recent burns were generally weak and highly variable across subspecies or ecotypes, suggesting that post‐fire habitat selection is likely context‐dependent and the need for regionally adapted habitat management strategies.

Constraining variability of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation at 25N from historical observations, 1980 to 2005

open access: yes, 2007
The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC) plays an important role inmaintaining western Europe’s moderate climate. Although expected to weaken underincreasing greenhouse gas concentrations, the magnitude of the response remainsuncertain ...

A satellite view of the space-time variability of phytoplankton biomass in the Mediterranean Sea [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The general thesis objective is to determine, with sufficient accuracy (i.e. using the most reliable datasets and techniques) the phytoplankton space time variability in the Mediterranean Sea (MED) using satellite data (SeaWiFS), at different timescales,
