Intercomparisons as an important element of quality assurance in metrology of ionising radiation [PDF]

open access: yesNuclear Technology and Radiation Protection, 2015
Intercomparisons are important activities performed to ensure that the services provided by calibration laboratories to end-users follow internationally accepted standards. Ionizing radiation dosimetry intercomparisons are usually of two types -

A Monte Carlo study of proton LET calculations: Comparison between the codes PENHAN, FLUKA, and TOPAS. [PDF]

open access: yesMed Phys
Abstract Background Linear energy transfer (LET) is frequently used to characterize radiation quality in proton therapy and is an important quantity for radiobiological modeling. However, LET calculations can, in principle, vary between Monte Carlo (MC) codes, affecting consistency in treatment planning and relative biological effectiveness (RBE ...

Scintillometer Intercomparison Study—Continued [PDF]

open access: yesBoundary-Layer Meteorology, 2009
An earlier study by one of the authors reported significant differences of up to 21% in linear regression slopes between six Kipp & Zonen large-aperture scintillometers. In this note, the consistency of this increasingly popular instrument for measuring sensible heat fluxes at the km scale was quantified by comparing measurements from four Scintec ...

Assessing wildfire dynamics during a megafire in Portugal using the MesoNH/ForeFire coupled model

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Weather conditions affect megafires by inducing different fire behaviors over several days or weeks. The coupled MesoNH/ForeFire code was used to represent the dynamics of fire generating pyro‐convective clouds. To advance the understanding of wildfire dynamics, high‐resolution coupled fire–atmosphere modeling was employed.

Seasonal hindcasts to assess the hazard of meteorological drought over Europe: A multimodel approach

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
An application of seasonal hindcasts is presented for assessing the hazard of meteorological drought at the regional scale across Europe. The realism of seasonal hindcasts from five contributors to the Copernicus Climate Change Service is assessed through a rigorous workflow.

The Punta Galea boundary layer profiler: intercomparison with radiosonde data and first mesoscale meteorological case studies

open access: yesMeteorologische Zeitschrift, 1998
The main characteristics, data availability and some case studies observed during the operation of the boundary layer profiler at Punta Galea (Bilbao, Spain) are described together with an intercomparison study with a radiosonde system.

Machine‐learning approaches for characterizing the raindrop size distributions in Western Pacific tropical cyclones

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Long‐term disdrometer observations are utilized to derive Z–R relationships for ‐the Western Pacific tropical cyclones. A hybrid moment‐based approach is employed to determine the interrelationships among pairs of gamma distribution parameters. Enhanced estimates of rainfall rate and slope parameter are obtained using machine‐learning techniques ...

Thermodynamic and microphysical properties of summertime marine fog observed from Sable Island

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Atmospheric profiling and near‐surface fog and visibility measurements revealed synoptic‐scale forcing as the dominant factor in fog formation over Sable Island, with deep fog layers under low‐pressure systems and shallow fog layers under high‐pressure systems.
