Predictability of North Pacific blocking events: Analogue‐based analysis of historical MIROC6 simulations

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
The predictability of western and eastern North Pacific blocking events is assessed using analogue‐based diagnostics. Eastern blocks exhibit lower predictability, characterized by faster error growth and higher mean logarithmic divergence rates. The study highlights geographical contrasts in blocking stability.

Assessment of the performance characteristics of an optically stimulated luminescence dosimetry system in Gabon

open access: yesRadiation Protection and Environment, 2018
To ensure the reliability of the performance of the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dosimetry system used for individual monitoring of occupationally exposed workers in Gabon, some key performance indicators were evaluated.

An objective Bayesian method for including parameter uncertainty in ensemble model output statistics

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Conventional model output statistics and ensemble model output statistics methods for calibrating ensemble forecasts lead to severe underestimation of the probabilities of ensemble extremes (in blue). This is because they ignore statistical parameter uncertainty.

Quantifying driving ensemble influence on operational convection‐permitting ensemble spread

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
By comparing statistics of precipitation patterns between a convection‐permitting ensemble and the global ensemble used to drive it, we investigate the conditions under which the convection‐permitting ensemble diverges from the evolution of the driving ensemble.

Reconciling Global Terrestrial Evapotranspiration Estimates From Multi‐Product Intercomparison and Evaluation

open access: yesWater Resources Research
Terrestrial evapotranspiration (ET) is a vital process regulating the terrestrial water balance. However, significant uncertainties persist in global ET estimates.

Development of automatic intercomparison system for generation of time scale ensembling several atomic clocks

open access: yesInternational Journal of Metrology and Quality Engineering, 2015
National physical laboratory India (NPLI) has five commercial cesium atomic clocks. Till recently one of these clocks had been used to maintain coordinated universal time (UTC) of NPLI.

Oxygen Optode Sensors: Principle, Characterization, Calibration, and Application in the Ocean

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2018
Recently, measurements of oxygen concentration in the ocean—one of the most classical parameters in chemical oceanography—are experiencing a revival. This is not surprising, given the key role of oxygen for assessing the status of the marine carbon cycle

Neutron flux intercomparison at NBS

open access: yesJournal of Research of the National Bureau of Standards, 1978
National Bureau of Standards (NBS) participation in an International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) sponsored neutron flux intercomparison is described. The efficiencies of two transfer instruments, a gas-filled 3He proportional counter and a BF3 counter imbedded in a polyethylene sphere, were determined at neutron energies of 250 keV and 560 ...

Record‐breaking May heat in the UK: contrasting the extreme temperatures of 2024 and 1944 using climate attribution

open access: yesWeather, EarlyView.
This study quantifies the likelihood of May temperature extremes in present, natural (climatology based on pre‐industrial forcings) and future climates. The attribution applies in the context of a May heatwave comparable to the record‐breaking 1944 event and the persistent record‐breaking monthly‐mean temperature from 2024.

Diel thermal variability does not always have detrimental effects on the performance of ectotherms

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Climate change directly affects animal survival, with ectotherms being particularly vulnerable because their vital rates are closely related to environmental temperatures.
