Mechanisms of austenite growth during intercritical annealing in medium manganese steels
Abstract The third-generation advanced high strength medium manganese (3–12 wt.%) steels typically consist of ultrafine-grained dual-phase (austenite-ferrite) microstructure, obtained through the intercritical annealing of martensite at temperatures typically ≤ 0.5Tmelt, where the bulk diffusion of Mn is extremely slow.

Effects of Vanadium Microalloying and Intercritical Annealing on Yield Strength-Ductility Trade-Offs of Medium-Manganese Steels. [PDF]
In this paper, we investigate the effects of vanadium on the strength and ductility of medium-manganese steels by analyzing the microstructural evolution and strain hardening rates and performing quantitative calculations.

One method of achieving exceptional ductility and toughness of PH 13-8 Mo maraging steels is to perform agingat high temperatures or for prolonged dwell times, which is referred to as overaging. The increase in ductility andtoughness is primarily related

Effect of Mn-Enriched Cementite on Austenite Formation During Intercritical Annealing
Intercritical annealing (IA) heat treatments are implemented to a variety of steels with the general intent to form austenite and generate composite final microstructures. The austenite may or may not be retained upon cooling from IA.

Improving lightweight materials processing for automotive by using intercritical annealing [PDF]
“Fat men cannot run as fast as thin men, but we build most of our vehicles as though deadweight fat increased speed…. I cannot imagine where the delusion that weight means strength came from….” - Henry Ford. Fuel efficiency and safety innovations are the most important consumer consideration purchasing a car.

Optimization of Intercritical Annealing Temperature for Improved Toughness
This master's thesis has been commissioned by the product development team at SSAB Special Steels in Oxelösund to optimize the intercritical annealing temperature for improved toughness, and to investigate the potential use of intercritical annealing as the first of three heat treatments.
