Tree Species Vulnerability to Fire Increases at Dry Range Edge

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology Communications, Volume 1, Issue 4, December 2026.
Following severe drought and fire, some tree species experience increased tree mortality, topkill (death of above‐ground biomass) and lower rates of seedling recruitment at the dry edge of their ranges, while other species maintain resilience, exhibiting low rates of mortality and topkill and high rates of recruitment across their ranges.

Interdecadal variation of ENSO predictability in multiple models

open access: yes, 2020
In this study, we performed ENSO (El Niño and the Southern Oscillation) retrospective forecasts for the 120 years from 1881-2000 using three realistic models that assimilate the historic dataset of sea surface temperature (SST).

Interdecadal Phase Shifts of Winter Asian‐Pacific Oscillation Modulate the Warm Arctic‐Cold Eurasia Pattern

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 19, 16 October 2026.
Abstract Against the backdrop of global warming, warm Arctic‐cold Eurasia (WACE) has garnered extensive scientific attention. However, the drivers of its interdecadal variability remain insufficiently understood. Using reanalysis data and pre‐industrial control simulations, we demonstrate that winter Asian‐Pacific Oscillation (APO), a dominant upper ...

The Predictability of Interdecadal Changes in ENSO Activity and ENSO Teleconnections

open access: yes, 2006
El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in a century-long integration of a Bureau of Meteorology Research Centre (BMRC) coupled general circulation model (CGCM) drives rainfall and temperature changes over Australia that are generally consistent with ...

Paleo‐Hydrological Drought in the South Saskatchewan River Basin: Implications for Water Allocation and Management

open access: yesJAWRA Journal of the American Water Resources Association, Volume 62, Issue 5, October 2026.
ABSTRACT The South Saskatchewan River Basin (SSRB) in southern Alberta is the only major Canadian watershed where water supplies are effectively fully allocated. This was the first region targeted for land‐use and water‐supply planning under new provincial legislation.

Rapid Global Oxygen Shifts and Delayed OMZ Response: Pulse and Memory of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 18, 28 September 2026.
Abstract Natural decadal variability often obscures anthropogenic trends in ocean deoxygenation. Using a global observational oxygen reconstruction (1965–2022), we investigate the role of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) in modulating decadal oxygen variability.

On the dynamics of interdecadal thermocline depth and sea surface temperature variability in the low to mid-latitude Pacific Ocean

open access: yes, 2004
The role of upper ocean dynamics in generating interdecadal sea surface temperature (SST) variations is investigated with the help of the Australian Bureau of Meteorology Research Centre coupled general circulation model (CGCM) and a first baroclinic ...

Internal Variability Dominates the Spatial Heterogeneity of Recent Trends in Eurasian Winter Cold Extremes

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 18, 28 September 2026.
Abstract Eurasia, with its large and climate‐vulnerable population, has experienced increased cold extremes despite global warming, yet their pronounced spatial heterogeneity remains poorly understood. We examine low‐frequency trends in Eurasian cold extremes over recent decades.

QBO–TC Relationship in the Western North Pacific Is Nonstationary

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 18, 28 September 2026.
Abstract The Quasi‐Biennial Oscillation (QBO) has been proposed as a key factor modulating tropical cyclone (TC) tracks in the western North Pacific, but its robustness remains controversial. This study revisits the QBO–TC relationship by extending the analysis period to 2024.

A micro-perspective on variation and universals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
This paper approaches the questions raised in the workshop description surrounding universals and variation from the perspective of microvariation. Throughout this document we frequently refer to van Craenenbroeck and van Koppen (2016) (henceforth VCVK),
