Investigating the Interplay of Self-Construal and Independent Vs. Interdependent Self-Affirmation

Journal of Health Communication, 2019
This study examines how the relative effects of independent and interdependent self-affirmation might be influenced by individuals' self-construal. A controlled experiment involving 186 Chinese adult smokers revealed a significant interactive effect of self-affirmation type and self-construal on message derogation and posttest attitudes toward smoking.

Relational interdependent self-construal and friendship maintenance in adulthood

2021
Friendship is a critical but understudied component of the social lives of adults. Despite the association of friendship with many positive wellbeing outcomes, maintaining friendships in adulthood is challenging. To better understand why adult friendships often breakdown, I assessed what characteristics may lead to successful friendship maintenance in ...

Altogether now: Activating interdependent self-construal induces hypermotor resonance

Cognitive Neuroscience, 2011
Nonconscious mimicry (NCM) has been widely studied but the mechanisms underlying it remain unspecified. One possibility is that NCM is mediated by motor resonance (MR). If so, factors that moderate NCM may affect MR. Priming interdependent self-construal (InterSC) increases NCM.

The Relational-Interdependent Self-Construal, Self-Concept Consistency, and Well-Being.

Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 2003
Examination of the assumptions underlying consistency perspectives in social and personality psychology reveals that they are based on an independent, individualistic view of the self. If the self is constructed as relational or interdependent with others, consistency may be less important in social behavior and well-being.

Independent and Interdependent Self-Construals do Not Predict Analytic or Holistic Reasoning

Psychological Reports, 2014
Independent self-construals in Western cultures may promote analytic information processing and low field dependence, while interdependent self-construals in Eastern cultures may foster holistic information processing and high field dependence.

The pleasures and pains of distinct self-construals: The role of interdependence in regulatory focus.

Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 2000
Regulatory focus theory distinguishes between self-regulatory processes that focus on promotion and prevention strategies for goal pursuit. Five studies provide support for the hypothesis that these strategies differ for individuals with distinct self-construals.

The Relational-Interdependent Self-Construal and Positive Illusions in Friendship

Self and Identity, 2013
Three studies investigated whether the tendency to define the self in terms of close relationships moderates positive illusions in friendship (i.e., operationalized as the better-than-average effect). High scorers on the Relational-Interdependent Self-Construal (RISC) Scale were more likely to enhance a close/best friend over an acquaintance (Study 1),

Interdependent self‐construal moderates coping with (but not the initial pain of) ostracism

Asian Journal of Social Psychology, 2013
Ostracism – being excluded and ignored – can cause psychological distress. There has been little research examining how a person's concept of self might influence the effects of ostracism. In the current study, we sought to examine the effect of self‐construal on the distress created by ostracism.

An efficient acute stress response in Chinese individuals with high interdependent self-construal

Anxiety, Stress, & Coping, 2020
An efficient stress response comprises both quick reactivity and rapid recovery. Studies have found an enhanced stress response in Chinese people with high interdependent self-construal (ISC). ISC is a personality trait that is well-matched with Chinese collectivistic culture, and whether they exhibit an efficient stress response has not been ...
